Scientist in the field of machine learning for gas network simulations

Оccupation: Research and development engineer

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.de) currently operates 75 institutes and research institutions in Germany and is one of the leading organisations for application-oriented research. Around 32 000 employees develop the annual research volume of 3.4 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer-Institut für Algorithmen und Wissenschaftliche Rechnen SCAI in Sankt Augustin, near Bonn, researches and develops innovative methods in the field of Computational Science with around 180 employees and implements them as a partner of the economy into industrial practice. What you do with us The Network Evaluation Technologies (NET) division of Fraunhofer SCAI focuses on the development of innovative software for the planning, simulation and optimization of energy networks. In our software, we use MYNTS mathematical and physical models to simulate flow dynamics and energy flow in various networks, including gas, H2, CO2, electricity and heat, as well as their connections.

For our MYNTS team we are looking for reinforcement in the field of simulation of physical transport networks and the development of machine learning models. MYNTS is used in national and international research and development projects and in industrial initiatives related to energy networks. As a member of the MYNTS team, you will contribute to these important projects.

Your tasks include:

  • Analysis and conception of machine learning models in the field of gas grid simulation
  • Implementation of models in production environments
  • Integration of models into existing gas network management systems
  • Continuous monitoring of model performance and, if necessary, updating
  • Development of MYNTS interfaces for ML methods.
  • Implementation of analyses, benchmarks, tests and documentation of the software
  • Presentation of results in science and industry

What you bring

  • A successfully completed university degree in engineering
  • Experience in the field of gas grid simulation and gas grid modeling
  • Very good knowledge in TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch as well as in algorithms and techniques of machine learning
  • knowledge of gas models or fluid mechanics
  • Experience in handling gas simulators, such as Simone
  • Very good knowledge of Python
  • Good English knowledge of word and writing
  • Joy and interest in the diverse tasks in developing sophisticated software products
  • Process- and result-oriented mode of operation and a high commitment and success will also be working on new topics
