Research for a society in change: This is our drive at the Forschungszentrum Jülich. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, we face the great social challenges of our time and explore interdisciplinary the digitized society, a climate-saving energy system and sustainable economy. Work together with nearly 7,700 colleagues in one of the largest research centres in Europe and shape the change with us! At the Institute for Advanced Simulation – Civil Security Research (IAS-7) of the Forschungszentrum JÃ1⁄4lich we explore the complex dynamics of crowds. Our aim is to make situations of high density of people safer and more comfortable, for example in railway stations, conference venues or events. For the ERC-funded Synergy-Grant project CrowdING, we are collaborating a new interdisciplinary research team. In common, we want to understand when and why people change their behaviour in large groups – for example, if a calmly waiting crowd becomes impatient. A team of scientists: women from physics, computer science and social psychology develop new approaches to the description of crowd dynamiks. Research is supported by large-scale laboratory experiments (e.g.: https://doi.org/10.17815/CD.2023.141) with numerous subjects and modern sensor systems. You work closely with our scientists: in the field of pedestrian dynamics research Its central task is to organise, experimentally implement and develop pedestrian experiments with large groups. To do this, prepare the appropriate sensor system, select suitable systems, which are used, inter alia, for motion analysis or for the detection of perception processes, and make them usable for changing research questions. You are also responsible for data collection, which includes the synchronization, fusion and provision of data collected The software used in the process of data collection and evaluation is developed or adapted by you

Complete master's degree in engineering or natural science, mathematics, computer science or comparable disciplines Ideally, experience in experimental work – more important than previous knowledge, however, is a strong interest in the planning, organization and presentation of complex processes. Interest in designing and applying sensor systems and their technical and software adaptation Ideally experience in software development, preferably in signal and image processing; if there is no pre-experience: willingness to participate in a training program in the field of software development Social and communicative competence for cooperation in and with interdisciplinary teams High own initiative Very good German knowledge both oral and written are absolutely necessary (at least B2 level according to the GER: https://go.fzj.de/language knowledge). Very good knowledge of English is a plus.
