Research Assistant - Autonomous Robotics and Communication Technology in the Industrial IoT (m/f/d)

The WZL machine tool laboratory at RWTH Aachen stands for practical basic research in the entire field of production technology. The Industrial Internet of Things research area is anchored in the Department of Automation and Control Technology at the Chair of Machine Tools (Professor Brecher). The department addresses research questions about Industry 4.0 in the production environment and interdisciplinary application domains. Thematic focus is on robot-assisted assembly and manufacturing processes, human-tech interaction and human-robot collaboration as well as technologies and systems of the Industrial Internet of Things. For our team, we are looking for a scientific staff member to strengthen our work in the field of the Industrial Internet of Things. The RWTH is certified as a family-friendly university. You design and implement new control and control concepts, (wireless) communication solutions as well as software-based systems for industrial controllers, microcontrollers and system-on-chip platforms. Another focus is on the development and integration of flight-based robotics applications – including SLAM-based localization and mapping processes – for autonomous navigation as well as state and process data acquisition in industrial environments. The results flow into diverse research and industrial projects and are tested and developed in different fields of application of production technology. Your duties As a scientific assistant at the WZL machine tool laboratory, you develop innovative solutions in the field of control technology, automation technology and communication technologies for the Industrial Internet of Things in research and industrial projects. Your tasks include: Project management from research and industrial projects to prototypical implementation Development of control, automation and communication concepts for production technology Care of courses and scientific work Takeover of industrial and university training and teaching activities Acquisition of industrial and publicly funded research projects

Successfully completed university studies (master or comparable) in mathematics, physics or relevant engineering (e.g. mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science/information technology) or comparable Enthusiasm for technological challenges at the interface of software and hardware Advanced knowledge in C (Embedded Systems, microcontroller-related development) Practice in the productive use of LLM-based software development and IDE integration (e.g. OpenAI Codex, GitHub copilot or comparable tools) Experience with embedded real-time systems, communication protocols and network technology, in particular wireless communication and edge and cloud computing Very good analytical and conceptual skills, independent working and high motivation Secure appearance, creativity and joy in quickly evaluating new technologies and converting them into prototypes Very good knowledge of German and English for cooperation with national and international partners Openness and team capacity for work in an interdisciplinary environment Interest in mobile robotics, localization and sensor-based navigation (e.g. SLAM, sensor fusion)
