PhD student in Mechanical Engineering – Automating wire-based cladding for highly stressed wear protection coatings (m/f/d)

Branch: Humanities Branch: Humanities

The Institute for Surface Engineering (IOT) at RWTH Aachen is now looking for a dedicated PhD student (w/m/d) in the field of mechanical engineering with a focus on the development of highly wear-resistant armorings for production technology. The IOT is a leader in the research and development of joining and surface techniques. Our expertise encompasses the industrially relevant technologies Thermal spraying, Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD), application welding as well as hard and application soldering. Our dedicated and diverse team uses these technologies to develop innovative solutions in the fields of energy, automation and industry. Our approach is characterized by the range of basic research to practical implementation. The working day on the IOT includes the work in the team on technical questions. The practical training of our students and the industry-oriented and application-oriented research have a very high priority for us. The cohesion within the IOT team and also our former employees is highly appreciated, which is why we organize regular events such as summer festivals, excursions or an industrial colloquium. In everyday life, our employees enjoy the common lunch break, content discussions and regular listening with cold drinks on Friday afternoon. In the field of application welding, the development of wear-resistant coatings for abrasively stressed surfaces is currently in focus. Here, a wear protection layer based on a carbide-reinforced alloy is to be applied to stirring and mixing tools for the processing of highly abrasive raw materials. The components produced in this way have a significantly extended service life and can make the processing of raw materials more effective and sustainable. Within the scope of this project, a process engineering as well as a material engineering development of these tanks is to be implemented in a market-ready manner. .

Your tasks • Your profile • What we offer

Project management: You provide independent public and/or industrially funded research projects in the field of surface technology. This includes: Development of application welding processes for the production of highly wear-resistant tanks Optimization of the alloy composition with the aim of maximum wear protection against abrasive attack Characterization of developed armorings on macroscopic and microscopic levels in the laboratory performing functional testing of armored components under realistic conditions Scientific work: You develop scientific foundations and develop application-related solutions to current challenges in surface technology. Communication and Presentation: You present research results at national and international conferences and represent the Institute in specialist bodies and working groups. Teaching and training: Support for courses and practical exercises in the field of surface and coating technology to pass on your knowledge to students. Can you identify yourself with the tasks and challenges? Then we're happy to meet you.

Academic qualification: You have completed your university degree (master or comparable) in a technical field such as mechanical engineering, material science, material engineering or industrial engineering. Self-employment and initiative: Planning and implementing projects independently, actively addressing problems and developing innovative solutions are among your strengths. Team skills and communication skills: You are a team player and have excellent communicative skills, both in scientific exchange and in teaching. You are able to convey complex facts clearly and understandably. Language skills: You can control German and English fluently in word and writing, which allows you to communicate and publish at national and international levels. Problem solving capability: You are characterized by an analytical and targeted way of working, which allows you to efficiently solve complex problems. Technical knowledge: You have well-founded knowledge of materials engineering and mechanical engineering, ideally with practical experience in application to real problems, especially in the field of surface technology.
