Investigation of loss-free and loss-affected compression methods and analysis of image processing pipelines used by users Evaluation of these methods on real datasets and development of a compression method with maximum compression rate when obtaining the image information relevant for further processing Implementation of automated data reduction workflows and integration into data nest pipelines to the storage systems Development of a data access framework that allows transparent access to compressed data for existing applications Use of caching mechanisms for minimizing charging times for complete data sets and for application-specific subsets Publication of a study on compression methods and documentation of the developed software
A completed academic degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or a related subject Understanding system design principles with a focus on performance, scalability and architectural trade-offs Ability to analytically evaluate architectural decisions under real boundary conditions and to establish a sound basis Good programming skills, especially in C and Python Experience in image processing Good Linux skills Experience with compression algorithms, modern database technologies, virtual file systems, HPC and parallel programming with OpenCL/CUDA are advantageous
