in the European Union. Use intracellular cometal and pathogenic microbes and invade the cell systems of their hosts to ensure their survival, replication and spread. The relative simplicity of many microbes and the ability to manipulate them genetically have made them ideal model systems for analyzing basic cellular, biological and neurological processes, including cell death and innate immunity. Interdisciplinary research, the integration of state-of-the-art cellular, immunological and neurological model systems and advanced technological approaches offer the potential to deepen our understanding of host pathogen interactions, with particular focus on hepatitis E viruses, at translational level in this area.

Furthermore, the role of insufficiently researched molecular and cellular effectors in encountering comesal and pathogenic microbes is to be clarified in order to identify potential target structures for the development of new therapeutics. Together, these efforts contribute to expanding our understanding of the dynamic interaction between host and microbe and developing new approaches to combating and eliminating pathogens. In particular, the focus is on the following research questions at the interface of host-microbial interactions and their intervention: • research and translation of antiviral drugs, in particular by the development of active substances against hepatitis E viruses, which either directly target viral targets or relevant host processes. • Investigation of mechanisms of antiviral therapies and resistance development against hepatitis E virus in order to enable more effective intervention strategies in the long term. In addition, the jobholder* is to integrate into the research areas of the Faculty (Oncology, Neuroscience and Protein Sciences). Clinical and scientific cooperation with institutions of the Faculty of Medicine and the UK RUB in the existing research areas and development areas as well as participation in existing and future collaborative research projects are desirable.
