Research Assistant Wind Energy Applications \u2012 Modelling of Atmospheric Flows
The Fraunhofer Society is one of the world's leading organisations for application-oriented research. 75 institutes develop groundbreaking technologies for our economy and society – more precisely: 32 000 people from technology, science, administration and IT. You know, who comes to Fraunhofer wants and can change something. For yourself, for us and the markets of today and tomorrow. At the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems IWES, the energy transition becomes reality every day. Our focus topics are: offshore wind energy, hydrogen, testing infrastructure and digitalization. More than 400 employees – around 100 of them – from more than 50 countries, work at nine locations in scientific and non-scientific teams to develop innovative methods to accelerate the expansion of wind energy and hydrogen management, minimize risks and increase cost efficiency. Your tasks • Your profile • What we offer
You strengthen the group ''Numerical yield and location analysis'' at the Oldenburg site. We develop methods for evaluating wind turbine and wind farm locations. For this, we transfer models from basic research into industrial application and develop them further. Currently, the team consists of eight employees and several students. Regardless of projects and backgrounds, we support each other. The open exchange and cooperation, also beyond team boundaries and locations, are particularly important to us. You develop numerical models (e.g. WRF, ICON, PALM or FOXES) and methods for evaluating atmospheric flow processes on different scales. These models are used for a wide range of contexts in research and industrial projects, for example for consulting companies, policies and authorities, and are linked to economic and business analyses. You drive the validation of the models with a large data scrap from operating data of wind farms and measurements in and around the parks. You will also contribute to the development of ideas for research projects and take the lead in smaller projects. In addition, you will create publications on your scientific knowledge and present them at international conferences.
You have completed your Master's degree in Meteorology, Oceanography, Physics, (Techno)Mathematics or Engineering. You have experiences in the numerical modelling of atmospheric processes and have already come into contact with meteorological topics? You can program in Python or Julia? Great! Ideally, you even bring know-how in the data analysis. Great if you have basic knowledge in project management and in machine learning, artificial intelligence or wind energy. But don't worry if your profile doesn't cover all fields yet. With us you can also master your career. We act on the IWES at an international level, which is why, besides German and English, you can make everyday work easier.
We support you on your individual career path. Be it personal, professional or methodical, we will find the appropriate training measures for you. It is also possible with us to do a doctorate independently. We're on your side! You want to introduce yourself to other topics and drive yourself forward issues? With us, you actively shape your task. Our open institute culture, mutual tolerance and respect help each person feel comfortable with us from the outset. For example, we promote this through our onboarding programme for new employees and through awareness and further training on the subject of diversity and equal opportunities. Because we firmly believe that diversity contributes decisively to our success. Come to us too and convince yourself! With our sliding and core work time system you can make your working day flexible. In addition, you have the opportunity to work mobile. You don't know in emergencies where to put your children? We'll support you with emergency care. Working discounts for events, clothing, holidays & Co. are you located? With us you can choose from a variety of offers and use them easily for you by app. For sustainable mobility, you can also make a job ticket from the German ticket. .
