Number: MER0003OAV The “System Development HV Batteries” division of “Mercedes-Benz AG” deals with the evaluation of current and future high-voltage battery concepts for battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. For this purpose, simulation models are used in early development phases in order to optimally design and coordinate vehicle and components. Physically based aging models for the dominant aging effects are developed for the correct life prediction of lithium ion cells. The aging and drying of the electrolyte was identified as a decisive mechanism behind the sudden strong loss of capacity (Sudden-Death). In order to parameterize this model cost-effectively, measurements are used using experimental cells. These challenges come to you: At the experimental cell level, an aging model is to be parameterized using impedance measurements. In addition, the influence of the measurement setup on the measurement results is considered more precisely. The following steps are planned: literature research on battery cell aging, impedance measurements and their interpretation Measurement of different Li-ion experimental cells with varying measurement setup and cell parameters impedance measurements in the frequency and time range with varying cell structures Analysis of the performance of the Li-ion cell with Matlab Evaluation of data and drawing conclusions on aging effects, as well as evaluation of measurement methods
The final topics will be discussed with the university, you and us. The final work can start from September 2025.
