Supplier: Chair and Institute of Jet Drives and Turbomachines RWTH Aachen University's Institute for Jet Drives and Turbo Machines (IST) is one of the leading university research institutes in the field of aviation drives in Germany. Embedded in the dynamic research landscape of the Technology Region Aachen, the IST offers excellent conditions for your entry into a scientific or industrial career in aviation. In close cooperation with renowned industrial partners such as MTU Aero Engines, GE Aviation and various suppliers, we are driving forward-looking drive systems. With the help of state-of-the-art experimental and numerical methods, we are exploring innovative solutions for tomorrow's aviation drives. There are extensive infrastructures available to us – including several large test stands, wind tunnels and an institute's high-performance computing cluster. A central element of our work is the strategic partnership with the MTU Aero Engines as part of the “competence center for compressors”. Together we develop key technologies for the next generation of aircraft engines. In addition to the continuous development of efficient aircraft gas turbines, a special focus is on electrified drive concepts based on hydrogen fuel cells – an important step towards climate-neutral aviation. The RWTH is certified as a family-friendly university. RWTH offers a variety of health, counselling and prevention services (e.g. university sports) as part of a university health management. There is a wide range of training and the possibility of obtaining a job ticket for employees and civil servants. .

In the exciting field of aviation drives, we offer you the opportunity to actively participate in a variety of research projects – either with an experimental or numerical focus, depending on your interests and qualifications. In the field of compressor technology, you are working on our high-instrumented test stands and wind channels, which we operate together with our industrial partners. Here you have the opportunity to experimentally validate new technologies in the compressor. In addition, you perform accompanying CFD simulations to expand the measurement results and gain a comprehensive physical understanding of the flow processes. In the field of hydrogen-based fuel cell drives, you are involved in the development of central subsystems – in particular the design of air-drive-optimized cooling systems for thermal management and the design and optimization of turbo charging systems for air supply. Their work thus makes a direct contribution to the design of sustainable drive concepts for the aviation of tomorrow. In the field of prediction and performance calculation, you develop methods for analyzing and evaluating new drive systems and engine concepts. Use the GasTurb program environment. A special focus is on the investigation of electric and electrohybrid drives and engine concepts with direct hydrogen combustion. Using Reduced Order models to analyze emissions forecasting and using suitable climate metrics You have their technical feasibility and potential climate impact. In addition, you will develop methods for simplifying the forecast of propeller noise emissions, in particular in the context of Advanced Air Mobility and Urban Air Mobility. It is intended that you transfer your research results to a doctorate.

Your profile Are you excited about innovative technologies and want to contribute to sustainable aviation in the future? Then you are right with us! A prerequisite for the recruitment is a completed university degree (master or comparable) in the field of mechanical engineering, aerospace technology or a comparable engineering discipline. Required qualifications are: Good to very good studies knowledge of the aerodynamics of turbomachines Good or very good knowledge of German and English in word and writing
