Mirror replacement systems or Camera Monitoring Systems (CMS) are a promising alternative to conventional exterior mirrors and offer the potential to improve the perception of the vehicle environment and traffic safety. Through digital image processing, optimized visual fields and the integration of additional driver information, CMS can go beyond the possibilities of classic mirrors. At the same time, many regulatory requirements are historically based on conventional mirror concepts. This raises the question whether current regulations can fully exploit the technological potential of modern CMS.

The aim of this thesis is to examine the extent to which current mirror-based regulatory requirements influence or limit the design and safety potential of CMS. Technical possibilities, user aspects and regulatory boundary conditions are to be considered holistically.

Your tasks Introduction to the state of the art of CMS Research and analysis of relevant regulations and standards (e.g. UN R46) Comparison of conventional mirrors and CMS with regard to safety and usage aspects Identification of regulatory requirements with influence on system design Investigation of potential security benefits of modern CMS solutions Assessment of possible innovation barriers through existing regulations Development and discussion of future technical and regulatory approaches Documentation of results in the form of a scientific thesis
