Number: MER000476N The E-Motor-Systeme team is responsible for the design and calculation of electromagnetic designs & the control of electrical machines in the field of pre-development of electric drives at Mercedes-Benz. The development of efficient, cost-effective and powerful engines requires complex multiphysical simulations as well as iterative prototype creation. Conventional optimization methods are effective but often computationally intensive and time-consuming. This doctorate focuses on an approach to engine optimization using current AI methods / metamodels – replacement models – which are trained by, for example, machine learning (ML) in order to lower the computational walls and at the same time enable high accuracy. These metamodels are intended to approximate the behavior of detailed, computationally consuming, parameterized finite element models (FEM) and allow for a rapid examination of these design spaces. Your tasks include: Developing precise metamodels using ML techniques: To replicate electromagnetic FEM simulations of electric motors

For the approximation of multiphysics simulations (mechanical and thermal)

For computation-intensive FEM simulations in the field of inverter control and

Control strategies used

Integration of these metamodels into a multi-objective optimization framework

Validation of the approach on different engine types (e.g. EESM, PMSM, asynchronous motors)

Comparison of performance with traditional optimization techniques in terms of speed, accuracy and resource consumption

The activity can begin from November 2026. Adjustment requirement is the support of the doctoral project by a university lecturer. The selection of a corresponding person is the responsibility of the doctoral student.

Complete study of electrical engineering, computer science, vehicle technology or comparable

Secure knowledge of German and English in word and writing

Knowledge & experience in using AI methods

Commitment and team skills
