The nuclear spectroscopy of 229Thorium is a highly interesting research field of nuclear and nuclear physics, which deals with the properties of an exceptionally low excited state in the atomic nucleus of 229Thorium. This state has an estimated excitation energy of only about 8 eV. Recently, it has been possible for the first time to stimulate this state directly with an optical laser. As part of the HiTHOR project, located at the Helmholtz Institute Jena and funded by the European Research Council ERC, this nuclear transition will now be investigated in detail, which promises unique new insights into the quantum physics of nuclear nuclei and new approaches to the construction of a high-precision “core watch”. This project aims to further develop a frequency comb laser in a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectral range. In contrast to existing VUV combing systems, a new, much more efficient approach is to be followed. A further focus of this work is the development of a suitable control system and adaptations for the planned 229thorium-ion spectroscopy at GSI. The successful candidate will also support the support of a corresponding doctoral project.

a completed university degree and doctorate in physics, electrical engineering or a related field, excellent experience and expertise in the field of laser stabilization, frequency combs and phase control circuits, proven by relevant publications, experience in the field of fiber laser development and nonlinear optics, preferably existing knowledge in electronics, python and FPGA (VHDL) programming, interest in cooperation with experts in an interinstitutional cooperation project, very good English knowledge in word and writing, and strong team skills.

A varied activity in an internationally renowned research institution, embedded in the largest German organization for the promotion and financing of science. The body is limited to three years. The salary is based on the TVöD collective agreement (Bund). The Helmholtz Centre DESY is located in Hamburg.
