Job ID: J000000317 Location: Berlin Organization unit: Division 9.3: Welding technology Activity: Science/Research Type of employment: Full-time or part-time

Your tasks

As part of a research project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), a multiphysical numerical model for determining the influence of metal evaporation on the melting bath during laser beam welding is to be developed and optimized. The model is intended to solve the coupled problem of heat transport and fluid dynamics in the melt bath as well as in particular the evaporation of the metal in the keyhole based on temperature-dependent material parameters. The effects of metal evaporation are to be investigated with regard to their thermal and mechanical effects on the melt. The aim of the project is to clarify the influence of vaporization phenomena in the keyhole and to obtain a fundamental physical understanding of the interactions, mechanisms and dependencies that take place in the process for optimising welds.

  • Evaluation of the literature and analysis of existing models
  • Planning and performing the simulation work in a suitable simulation environment (e.g. Ansys Fluent, codes for implementing the Lattice-Boltzmann method)
  • Evaluation and analysis of simulation results
  • Experimental planning and implementation of experiments on laser systems with up to 60 kW power
  • Identification of coupled mechanisms of evaporation effect on the transient flow of the liquid metal in the melt bath
  • Documentation and publication of results in international journals and conferences
  • Application and acquisition of further research projects
  • Support for student assistants and graduates

The possibility for promotion is given.

Your qualifications

  • Very well completed university studies (Diplom, Master) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Physical Engineering, Production Engineering, Materials Science or Similar
  • Very good basic knowledge in the field of flow engineering and simulation
  • Very good knowledge and experience in carrying out numerical experiments, especially in the field of description of transport processes
  • Ideally experience in the application of ANSYS Fluent using user-defined functions for the specific adaptation of the numerical code
  • Advantages are knowledge of welding technology
  • Further advantageous are experiences in the application of the Lattice-Boltzmann method
  • Very good presentation skills
  • Good communication and information behaviour, targeted and structured working methods, initiative/readiness to use and skills, team capacity and cooperation, as well as conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills

Our Benefits

  • A comprehensive and multi-occupational training programme
  • A diversity-oriented working environment with lived equal opportunities in which different perspectives are estimated and individual potentials are promoted
  • Flexible working time
  • Work in national and international networks with universities, research institutions and industrial companies
  • Attractive location in the federal capital Berlin
  • Possibility of active participation in the development of quality and safety standards.
  • Possibility of mobile work
  • Attractive and modern working environment with excellent infrastructure and equipment at the latest scientific level
  • Access to high-quality training courses and training on digitization topics for targeted/technical further development.
  • good reconciliation of work, family and private life
