The Medical Imaging Division at the DKFZ develops innovative methods and software solutions at the interface of medical imaging, artificial intelligence, cloud technologies and modern research infrastructure. We are looking for a:n motivated:n Software Developer:in / Research Software Engineer (m/w/d) for the Radiological Cooperative Network (RACOON) project from September 2026. Reference number: 2026-0138 RACOON is the nationwide imaging platform of the University Medicine network. The aim of the project is to build and operate a distributed research infrastructure for medical image data, in particular for multicentric research projects, clinical studies, structured findings, annotation, AI-based image analysis and the standardized follow-up of radiological data. The infrastructure connects local RACOON sites at the German university clinics with central components in RACOON-CENTRAL. At the heart of your activity is RACOON-AI, the central AI platform within RACOON. RACOON-AI enables the integration, deployment and application of modern AI methods for medical image data in the nationwide network of university clinics. The platform supports the translation of innovative methods from medical image computing in clinical and scientific research infrastructures and thus contributes significantly to the technical realization of large multicentric research projects and clinical studies. RACOON-AI is based on the open source toolkit Kaapana, a Kubernetes-based platform for medical data analysis, AI workflows and federal analysis and learning scenarios. You work in an interdisciplinary team to develop, operate and support this platform in the nationwide RACOON network. Important information on the profile of the site: This position is not a pure data science, model training or promotional agency. The focus is on robust software development, platform operation, method integration, support and technical coordination within a nationwide medical research infrastructure that is used productively. The job is aimed at applicants: women who transfer research software into usable platform components, operate containerized services, integrate AI methods into reproducible workflows and want to solve technical questions together with university clinics, site informatics and project partners. Negotiating German knowledge at least on C1 level is absolutely necessary, since a substantial part of the activity consists of German-speaking communication, support and technical coordination with the RACOON sites, university clinics and project partners.

You support the technical operation and further development of RACOON-AI as a central AI platform in the RACOON network. Your tasks include: Development of RACOON-AI through software development in the Open Source Toolkit Kaapana Integration, provision and maintenance of AI methods, analysis workflows and containerized applications Supporting method translation from medical image computing to RACOON infrastructure at university clinics Software-technical integration of tools and concepts for the processing of multimodal medical data, including image data, structured clinical data and other research-relevant data sources within the RACOON-AI platform Technical support for multicentric research projects, clinical studies and medical use cases in the RACOON network Operation, maintenance, monitoring and error analysis of RACOON-AI instances, including central instances in RACOON-CENTRAL Second-level support for IT professionals at university clinics and local IT teams in operation, integration and use of the platform Development and maintenance of platform components in the environment of Kubernetes, Helm, Docker/Podman, Apache Airflow, OpenSearch, dcm4chee, MinIO/S3, Keycloak, Prometheus/Grafana and web-based user interfaces Creation and maintenance of technical documentation, operating instructions and support materials Participation in project meetings, technical consultations and workshops Presentation of the platform at events, networking formats and project meetings Participation in reporting, planning and technical coordination within the project
