Research Assistant - PhD Position in the Field of Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence for Road Safety and Intelligent Infrastructure (m/f/d)

At RWTH Aachen University's Institute for Road Transport, we develop solutions for safe, efficient and intelligent road infrastructure. Our work combines traffic safety, sensor technology and digitalization. The enrolled site deals with computer vision and artificial intelligence for the analysis of traffic and infrastructure based on camera and multimodal sensor data. With video, thermalography and other sensor systems, we investigate vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, trajectories, interactions and safety-relevant events. The aim is to transfer complex sensor data into resilient engineering knowledge for the assessment of traffic safety, infrastructure monitoring and digital road systems. We offer a doctorate at the interface of transport infrastructure and artificial intelligence, with access to real traffic data and modern sensor systems. The site offers you the opportunity to develop your own methods and software, to publish scientifically at a high level and to build an independent academic profile. You contribute to the development of this research area at ISAC and are involved in national and international research activities. The RWTH is certified as a family-friendly university. The job offers you the opportunity to research video and multimodal sensor data in the context of a promotion to computer vision and artificial intelligence for the analysis of traffic participants, traffic scenes and infrastructure. These include, in particular, detection, tracking, scene understanding, trajectory reconstruction, interaction analysis and automated interpretation of traffic situations. A person interested in developing his own methods and robust processing pipelines for scientific and engineering applications is sought. The work focuses on applications in road safety assessment, infrastructure monitoring and digital road systems. You work in research projects, publish scientific results and pursue the goal of a PhD in this field.

You have a university degree (master or comparable) in computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, transport engineering or a related field. You bring very good programming knowledge and a strong methodological basis. It is expected that you are interested in developing your own solutions and not mainly relying on existing software packages. Very good practical experience in programming languages such as Python, C++ or comparable languages is required. Experience in computer vision, machine learning or related areas is desirable. Knowledge of object detection, tracking, trajectory analysis, multimodal sensor technology, scene understanding, pose estimation, motion analysis or visual modeling of traffic participants are advantageous. Self-employed work and the ability to cooperate in an interdisciplinary environment are assumed. Very good English skills are required. German knowledge is desirable, the willingness to further develop it is welcome.

Supplier: Chair and Institute of Road Transport The employment is in the employment relationship. The place shall be occupied at the next possible time and shall be limited to 3 years.
