PhD student for the International Graduate College (IRTG 2773) ''Risks and Patho Mechanisms of Effective Disorders'' between TU Dresden and King's College London

The body (65 %, E13 under the public service agreement of the countries (TV-L) is available from 01.07.2025 and is first terminated until 31.12.2026, the extension is subject to the authorisation of third-party funds and is at least 12 months.

IRTG 2773 is an international graduate college funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), which consists of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the Technical University of Dresden and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology (IoPPN) King's College London. IRTG 2773 investigates risk factors and patho mechanisms of affective disorders to improve prevention, early detection and early intervention.

Within the transcampus® environment, young scientists are trained in translational psychiatry and have access to the outstanding scientific infrastructure of the two universities, where they can work in an interdisciplinary and international environment.

The place is to be occupied by the Professorship of Cognitive Neurophysiology (ActionLab). This working group focuses on the clarification of the neurophysiological determinants of human control of action in health and disease. The candidate will participate in the project ''Examination of the causal role of fronto-temporal networks in self-proclaims and emotional conflicts by tDCS at Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) (P5)' at the chair of Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Christian Beste.

The project investigates whether the stimulation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the temporal lobe improves cognitive emotional control or self-critical distortion in depressive patients. In order to investigate pathophysiological changes, EEG measurements with focus on theta and alpha oscillations are used. The aim of the project is to analyse the interaction of information processing in these frequency bands in order to identify the specific contributions of these neural mechanisms in cognitive emotional control and self-promotion. The project also includes research on non-clinical populations and aims to integrate computerised modelling approaches.

Higher Education (Master/Diplom) in Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience or Related Areas

very great interest in neurophysiology and non-invasive brain stimulation processes (especially EEG, tDCS, TMS)

solid programming knowledge in Matlab and Python are advantageous

very good written and oral language skills in English (C1) and German (at least A2)

strong interest in in interdisciplinary research in a team of psychologists, physicists, neuroscientists and mathematicians
