The three locations in Dresden and Hermsdorf (Thüringen) form the largest ceramic research institute in Europe. As a research and technology service provider, we develop modern ceramic high-performance materials, industry-relevant manufacturing processes and prototypical components and systems in complete production lines up to the pilot scale. In addition, the portfolio includes the competencies of material diagnosis and testing. High-temperature fuel cell stacks are a core component in SOFC systems. Their performance and reliability as well as the reproducible production at moderate costs are the prerequisite for fuel cell systems to be widely used in the market. Scientists at Fraunhofer IKTS help users develop stack designs that are tailor-made to the customer. This includes the construction of prototypes as well as the testing of system performance using standardized and adapted characterization methods. For example, Fraunhofer IKTS develops fuel cell stacks with its partners for the decentralised energy supply of micro-KWK systems to systems with a power of more than 20 kilowatts. Furthermore, the research institute designs automated production processes for its customers for the cost-effective production of the fuel cells. In addition to the use of fuel cells (SOFC) in various systems for power supply, the components were adapted and used in the field of high-temperature electrolysis (SOEC). In electrolysis operation, steam, carbon dioxide or a mixture of both gases (co-electrolysis) are reduced by applying a voltage. From the electrical excess energy, combustion gas is produced which can be stored and re-energized. Strategic cooperation was concluded with thyssekruppnucera 2024 to commercialize SOEC. Some research projects at the Fraunhofer IKTS are currently focusing on this technology transfer and the further development of the electrolyticians.
