PhD student in the field of interactive visual analysis of weather data (75%) (m/f/d)

At the Fulda University of Applied Informatics, the position is as follows:

ANALYSIS (m/w/d)

to the extent of a 75% office limited for the duration of 3 years according to §2 para. 1 WissZeitVG. Reference number AI-2026-III

Your main tasks:

› Processing of research questions in the field of interactive visual analysis of weather data, specifically for the overarching question how the development of artificial intelligence (AI) methods for the weather forecast can be supported by interactive visual analysis and explainable AI

› Enlargement and further development of the meteorological visualization system “Met.3D” (met3d.readthedocs.io) to enable the interactive 3-D visualization of meteorological observation data relevant to research; as well as the incorporation of methods of explainable AI in Met.3D

› Compilation of scientific publications and presentation of research results at national and international scientific conferences

› Cooperation with colleagues from meteorology

› Perception of 3 SWS teaching tasks

Your profile:

› a completed university degree (master degree or equivalent university degree) in computer science or a comparable discipline

› Wide knowledge of object-oriented programming with C++ and Python under Linux

Wide knowledge of computer graphics and programming with the OpenGL graphics API

Wide knowledge of methods of explainable artificial intelligence

› Experiences in handling meteorological data (e.g. from numerical simulations or observations) and knowledge of basic meteorological principles

Wide experience in the use and development (in C++ and with OpenGL under Linux) of the meteorological visualization system “Met.3D”

› Experiences in the international academic environment, e.g. through stays abroad

mastery of the German and English language for oral and written communication in the national and international academic environment, further language skills are advantageous

Willingness to cooperate with national and international colleagues and to participate in cooperation meetings and scientific conferences in the national and international environment
