The BBR is a federal authority in the department of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB). The main tasks are the implementation of construction measures by the Federal Government, in particular for the constitutional bodies and for the ministries in Berlin, Bonn and abroad as well as for the cultural structures of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin. The Unit Z 5 ''Justitiariat'' within the Department of Central Services supervises overriding legal matters and thus takes over the legal advice and also the judicial representation of the Authority, including the management of legal disputes and the preparation of opinions. Other tasks include, in particular, the audit/design of the contract, the coordination or uniformity of the legal application, the processing of disciplinary measures and data protection matters and the examination of claims for compensation.
