Storage Engineer / SAN SDS Specialist (w/m/d) Reference number: IT 2026/4 At HZB we work on materials and technologies for a climate-neutral society. Large amounts of research data are produced, which must be stored reliably, performantly and in a future-proof manner. That's exactly what we're looking for. With us, you actively shape the further development of a modern, multi-site storage infrastructure – from SAN and Scale-out NAS systems to open source solutions such as Ceph and technologies such as RDMA and NVMe over Fabrics. You bring your ideas directly into building new solutions by planning the architecture and taking the implementation into your hands. A technically demanding task awaits you with a lot of design space in an environment that directly supports research and innovation.

You design and implement modern storage solutions taking into account high availability, scalability and redundancy. Based on the respective requirements, you select suitable storage technologies such as Fibre Channel, Ceph, NVMe-oF or RoCE. Integrierst storage systems fit into existing infrastructures (servers, virtualization, cloud and backup), configuring them and operating them productively. You evaluiate new technologies for the continuous development of our storage infrastructure and build test and prototype environments. You automate operations by using script languages (e.g. Bash, Python) as well as automation frameworks such as Ansible. You monitor performance, availability and utilisation with suitable monitoring solutions and ensure a stable operation.

You have very good knowledge of Linux system landscapes as well as storage environments and brings well-founded experience in planning and implementing scalable, highly available storage solutions. In the design of complex storage architectures you are safe and could already gain practical experience. Storage networks like Fibre Channel or iSCSI as well as the operation of Scale-out NAS systems are familiar to you. You use script languages like Bash or Python routiniert in everyday work. With automation tools like Ansible, Terraform or OpenTofu, you have been working. You have knowledge in network protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP) as well as in the handling of storage hardware from popular manufacturers (e.g. Dell, HPE, Huawei). You have good communication skills in German and English (both at least B2-level).
