We are looking for a scientific co-worker / a scientific co-worker with a doctoral intent and a strong passion for 3D graphics, rendering and C++. The position combines scientific research with practical industrial projects – including applications in the space industry. About us: The Institute of Human Machine Interaction (MMI) is a nationally and internationally active and successful research institution in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the Rhine-Westphalian Technical University (RWTH) Aachen. The MMI is a specialist in modelling, simulation, control and analysis of complex systems in its application environment, for the interaction and networking of machines, devices and people, as well as for intelligent systems in space applications and on Earth. Digital twins realized at MMI revolutionize development processes and operation (not only) of robotic systems. You are the basis for the convergence of the virtual and real world – across industry and discipline. You work at the interface of Computer Graphics, XR technologies and industrial simulation and digitization processes. A special focus is on the production of highly realistic virtual environments based on 3D simulation models and novel rendering methods such as Gaussian Splatting. Your goal: Your software places people, sensors and systems in highly realistic virtual applications and uses state-of-the-art IT infrastructures and visualization systems. Your software develops components and systems, trains AI algorithms and validates the result. Your duties Your tasks: Research and development in the field of 3D rendering, visualization and simulation-based system development Development of performant C++ software for visualization, simulation and physically based rendering (PBR) Development and extension of software modules for rendering in the context of graphic interaction interfaces for the user as well as physically based simulation models for sensor technology (in particular camera and lidar) Digitalization and visualization of real production environments based on 3D scans and modern reconstruction and rendering processes (e.g. Gaussian Splatting) Development of XR applications for industrial and space-related scenarios Cooperation in research and industrial projects with direct practical relevance Supporting thesis and teaching of knowledge in the course of courses Publication of scientific results and visit of international conferences with the aim of promoting your topic and interest

Your profile Your profile: Very good master degree (or comparable) in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, computer graphics, game technology, visual computing or a related area Very good programming skills in C++ Enthusiasm for 3D rendering, real-time graphics and visualization as well as the combination of modern software algorithms with high-end hardware technologies Experience with Graphic APIs (e.g. OpenGL, Volcano, DirectX) or Game Engines (e.g. Unreal, Unity) Interest in XR technologies (VR/AR/MR) Experience with 3D reconstruction, photogrammetry or Gaussian Splating is a plus Self-employed, creative and research-oriented work Very good knowledge of German and English
