Research Assistant (PhD Student) (m/f/d)

The SFB 1475 “Metaphers of Religion” is an interdisciplinary research association with 19 subprojects and more than 40 scientists. He bundles expertise from religious science, various philologies, digital humanities and computer linguistics to investigate how metaphors shape religious sensual processes. Research is carried out both historically and culturally comparable and using advanced computer linguistic methods. For further information, see https://sfb1475.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/Content of funding by the German Research Foundation at SFB 1475 in the subproject C06 “Women and men, aristocrats and citizens: A sociobiographical perspective on metaphors” on 01.07.2026 as a scientific assistant (documn:in; TV-L 13, 75 %). The place is fixed by 31.12.2029. C06 focuses on the influence of sociobiographic factors of the author:inside or addressee:inside, on metaphorics, e.g., which source domains occur particularly frequently in female vs. male addressees in early New High German sermons. The project follows a mixed method approach that combines manual annotations and a deep qualitative analysis with a corpus-based statistical analysis.

• Annotation of metaphorical information in historical and modern data of the German • Statistical analysis of sociobiographic factors (e.g. regression analysis) • Coordination and support of student assistants

• A completed master's degree (or equivalent) in linguistics or a comparable subject is desired, preferably with a focus in corpus or computer linguistics • Good knowledge of statistics and/or programming, preferably in R or Python • Very good German knowledge • Willingness to work on the subject (religion, metaphors, historical texts) • Experiences in manual annotation of text data are desired Competence in at least one of the two languages and the willingness to acquire the other are assumed.
