PhD student – MOF and zeolite-based membranes for the separation of H2 and CO2 (f/m/d)
Research for a society in change: This is our drive at the Jülich Research Centre. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, we are presenting great social challenges of our time and exploring options for the digitalisated society, a climate-saving energy system and related services. Work together with around 7,500 colleagues: in one of the largest research centres in Europe and shape the change with us! At the Institute of Energy Materials and Devices (IMD-2), we work in a dynamic and international team of over one hundred material scientists, chemists, physicists, engineers, engineers, engineers, engineers: in the development of advanced energy converters and high-performance accumulators (in particular oxide ceramic fuel cells). The heavy point lies on inorganic materials which are processed as functional layers of powders or via the gas phase. To this end, we use scalable, industry-relevant processes that ensure rapid transfer of research results to industry. This means that our work is essential to close the gap between basic knowledge and application. Strengthen this area as 01.09.2025 as PhD:in – MOF and zeolite-based membranes for the separation of H2 and CO2 (w/m/d) JOBV1_EN

Their work takes place within the framework of the NanoMem project funded by the BMBF competition, which deals with the development of hybrid 2D nanosheet MOFs / zeolite gas separation membranes. For this purpose, membrane carrier units are to be prepared, characterized and tested for their suitability for the use of gas separation. Your tasks are within the project: Development and production of suitable zeolites and metal organic frameworks Nanosheets Preparation and characterization of hybrid zeolites and MOFs on nanosheet-based membrane materials by wet chemical (e.g. immersion coating, in situ growth) and advanced methods, such as spray coating and chemical surface modification (gravure-from and surface-induced polymerization) Characterization of the membrane material, for example spectroscopic characterization (FTIR, liquid and solid NMR), X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy Permeation measurements on the membranes Evaluation of the measurements and correlation of the data obtained Preparation of presentations and project reports Presentation of results at meetings and scientific publications
Successfully completed or shortly before completion of the scientific study of chemistry, mineralogy or materials sciences or comparable engineering studies Experience in the synthesis of zeolites/metal-organic frameworks Nanosheets and/or chemical surface reactions (grafting, surface-induced polymerization) Knowledge of the following analytical methods: spectroscopic characterization (FTIR, liquid and solid NMR), X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy Experience with membranes and/or permeation measurements of advantage Experience in the planning, implementation and evaluation of scientific research tasks Self-employed and conscientious work Passion for practical development and laboratory work Ability to adapt to changes and prepare for flexible team work as well as strong communication skills Flowing English in Word and Scripture German knowledge of advantage
We work on highly topical socially relevant topics and offer you the opportunity to actively shape change! We support you in your work: A highly motivated working group and an international and interdisciplinar working environment in one of the largest research institutions in Europe Excellent scientific and technical infrastructure Possibility to participate in (international) conferences and project meetings Continuous technical assistance by your:n scientific:n The possibility of (local)flexible work, e.g. in the home office 30 days holiday (depending on the chosen model of working time) as well as all bridge days and between Christmas and New Year always free of service A large research campus in the countryside, which offers the best possibilities for networking with colleagues and for sporting compensation in addition to work further development of your personal strengths, e.g. through a comprehensive training offer; a structured program with further education and networking offerings, especially for doctoral students via JuDocS, the Jülich Center for Doctoral Researchers and Supervisors: fz-juelich.de/en/judocs The position is limited to three years with the possibility of a longer-term perspective. Compensation is carried out in accordance with the remuneration group 13 (75 %) of the public service collective agreement (TVöD-Bund) plus 60 % of a monthly salary as a special payment ('Christmas money'). A compensation exceeding the basic remuneration is possible if necessary. Please refer to page 66 of the PDF download: go.fzj.de/bmi.tvoed.
