Group Leader in the Field of Legal AI

Оccupation: Computer scientist

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.de) currently operates 75 institutes and research institutions in Germany and is one of the leading organisations for application-oriented research. Around 32 000 employees develop the annual research volume of 3.4 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS As part of the largest organization for application-oriented research in Europe, Fraunhofer IAIS, based in Sankt Augustin near Bonn, is one of the leading scientific institutes in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning and big data in Germany and Europe. With more than 350 employees, we develop intelligent solutions for the optimization of products, services, processes and structures for our supporters and customers from the economy, as well as for the development of new digital business models.

In the Hybrid Intelligence (HI) department, we bundle the expertise of a dedicated team of scientists and work in research projects with partners from science and industry on innovative approaches and solutions for the current challenges in application.

Our portfolio includes:

  • Machine learning solutions such as multi-agent systems and Recommender systems
  • the LLM Explore Hub for NLP applications
  • Textanonymization tools
  • Finetuning tool sets for large language models
  • Conception and implementation of practical AI workshops.

For our Finance and Legal Intelligence business, we are looking for a group leader in Legal AI at the next possible time.

What you do with us

  • Research, design and implementation of LLM-assisted reasoning and simulation models (including agent, process and negotiation simulations) for mapping real legal processes, including transfer of current SOTA methods into production-ready prototypes, empirical evaluation and iterative coordination with experts.
  • Research and development of novel hybrid AI approaches that combine LLM-based data representations with established ML and data science frameworks to provide powerful models for clustering, tear detection and forecasting in multimodal legal AI settings.
  • Establishment and management of an interdisciplinary legal AI team to develop a scalable software infrastructure, curate right-specific data sets with annotated legal tasks (e.g. issue spotting or risk assessment), definition of loadable evaluation metrics incl. Robustness, bias and hallucination tests as well as development and validation of domain-specific benchmarks.
  • Development of clear sub-area strategies with measurable targets, resource planning and prioritization along the overall roadmap of the Finance and Legal Intelligence business unit.
  • Take over the product ownership of selected projects with responsibility for roadmap, delivery, quality assurance and stakeholder coordination.
  • Participation in renowned scientific publications through conception, experiment design, evaluation and peer review processes
  • Presentation of results at conferences, workshops and industrial events for positioning the organization and dissemination of knowledge.
  • Acquisition of account management for strategic customers with systematic relationship building, demand analysis and long-term business development.
  • Implementation of innovation workshops at the customer for identifying value-giving AI applications and for switching up-to-date legal AI technologies.
  • Application of third-party funding through cooperation with industrial partners and successful participation in public tenders.

What you bring

  • A good or very good university degree (Master, Diploma) with a well or very well completed PhD in Business Informatics, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or a related subject.
  • Multiannual, relevant professional experience, ideally related to AI-based process optimization in the field of legal.
  • Proven leadership experience in leadership and motivation of interdisciplinary teams.
  • Impressed communication and persuasive skills for successful presentation and enforcement of innovative research ideas against different stakeholders.
  • Scientific excellence in the field of artificial intelligence, proven by high-level publications.
  • Experience gained in the development and application of LLM-based problem solution approaches, in particular for complex analytical and structured tasks.
  • Very good analytical skills, pleasure in abstract thinking and conceptual work.
  • Experiences with industrial applications of AI and pleasure in entrepreneurial thinking.
  • Flowing German knowledge (min. at level C2) with corresponding proof.

What you can expect

  • An interdisciplinary team that is mainly composed of different experts for artificial intelligence.
  • Future-oriented innovation projects in which we enter unknown terrain with our customers, i.e. a lot of design space, a highly creative work, collaborations with Dax-30 companies, hidden champions of the German middle class and tech start-ups.
  • Application-oriented research at top level within a federal German competence centre for machine learning and the possibility for scientific further qualification.
  • The chance to build a broad spectrum of competencies. Working at Fraunhofer means being a generalist: from the project acquisition, planning and actual project implementation to the outcome presentation, in different industries, from startup to the international group, providing students with a lot of contact with the university. Routine activity is a foreign word with us!
  • We support a good work-life balance through flexible working hours and part-time models. As part of the sliding time model, we also offer you the possibility of flexible working time design.
  • We live a family-friendly culture: Sometimes the family begins - we know that.
  • In our institute Diversity is an important strategic goal: we are actively engaged in equal opportunities and diversity, starting with a diversity training for all employees.

We value and promote the diversity of the competences of our employees and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, worldview, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Disabled people are preferably hired with the same suitability and qualification.

The weekly working time is 39 hours. The body can also be occupied in parttime. Employment, remuneration and social benefits are based on the public service collective agreement (TVöD). In addition, Fraunhofer can provide performance and success-dependent variable compensation components. The body is limited to 2 years, but can be extended with a successful takeover of appropriate responsibility.

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft plays a central role in the innovation process with its focus on key technologies relevant to the future as well as on the exploitation of results in business and industry. As a guide and impulse provider for innovative developments and scientific excellence, it works with the design of our society and our future.

We look forward to your application on our website!
