Sustainability Engineer – KI & Systems Engineering (m/f/d)

Branch: Humanities Branch: Humanities

The Fraunhofer Society is one of the world's leading organisations for application-oriented research. 75 institutes develop groundbreaking technologies for our economy and society – more precisely: 32 000 people from technology, science, administration and IT. You know, who comes to Fraunhofer wants and can change something. For yourself, for us and the markets of today and tomorrow. At the Fraunhofer Institute for Design Engineering Mechatronik IEM in Paderborn, we explore how the engineering of the future looks – together with strong partners and a lot of passion for technology. Our teams develop solutions that are really in use: from smart products to connected production systems to digital services and modern software. We think innovation from the first concept to the implementation. And right here you come into play. The "Advanced Systems Engineering" department deals with the central question of how complex technical systems can be developed data-driven, continuous and efficient over their entire life cycle. For this, we combine systems engineering, model-based systems engineering and modern technologies such as artificial intelligence to form a holistic approach for the engineering of the future. The focus is on the integration of methods, processes and IT systems to create consistent and scalable engineering ecosystems. In this course, the transformation to Industry Zero is in the focus. Companies face the challenge of developing complex systems not only efficiently, but also fundamentally questioning their business logic and reorienting business models along market performance and value creation. Digitization plays a key role here: It enables consistent, data-based engineering approaches as well as resource-efficient product and usage concepts and thus acts as an enabler as well as a driver of sustainable transformation. A special focus is on the development and application of Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) for the quantitative evaluation of environmental impacts throughout the product life cycle. Based on this, the Digital Product Pass (DPP) is becoming increasingly important as a central tool for the transparent provision of sustainable product data. Our research focuses on how these transformation tasks can be strategically planned, technologically supported and implemented effectively in practice – with the aim of integrating sustainable innovations measurably and scalable into industrial value creation. .

Your tasks • Your profile • What we offer

You work in research and industrial projects along the entire product life cycle – from the identification and structuring of sustainability potentials to the methodological conception and technical implementation and validation in real application scenarios. You develop and implement data-driven methods, prototypes and demonstrators in Sustainability Engineering, in particular for Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) and the Digital Product Pass (DPP), using artificial intelligence for analysis and automation. You integrate sustainability assessments and AI-based functions into existing engineering tool landscapes, data flows and processes and evaluate their added value in terms of transparency, efficiency and decision support. Interdisciplinary, you work with colleagues, industrial partners and contracting authorities, prepare results to address and present them convincingly. Last but not least, you will publish your results in technical contributions, participate in workshops, training and acquisition activities and promote the further development of the Sustainability Engineering theme.

An above-average university degree in a technical or economic field such as e.g. B. Computer Science, Business Informatics, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Business Administration Experience or knowledge of methods and tools in one or more of the following areas: Life Cycle Assessment, Product Carbon Footprint (PCF), Digital Product Pass (DPP); ideally complemented by knowledge in AI/ML for analysis and automation Good know-how along the product life cycle, e.g. in Systems Engineering, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), product development or related approaches – also to systematically integrate sustainability aspects into development processes The ability to work quickly into new application domains and regulatory frameworks (e.g. in the context of sustainability and circular economy), to analyze complex relationships in a structured manner and to translate them into implementable, data-based concepts Joy in convincingly representing technical content to customers, project partners and scientific audiences. Very good communication skills in German (mind. C1) and English

Look forward to a position where you drive the innovations of tomorrow. A pronounced team culture with flat hierarchies is of course for us. This means: high appreciation and trust, a pleasant and family-friendly working atmosphere, team events, joint lunch and creative colleagues. A modern working environment with flexible working hours and the possibility of a home office control with respect to your professional and private challenges awaits you.
