With around 1100 employees in Garching near Munich and Greifswald, the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics as an institute of the Max Planck Society for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities is the largest centre for fusion research in Europe. The scientists investigate the physical foundations for a fusion power plant that – similar to the sun – gains energy from the fusion of light nuclear nuclei.
