Master's thesis – Development of apparatus for the post-treatment of electrolysis gases
Research for a society in change: This is our drive at the Jülich Research Centre. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, we are presenting great social challenges of our time and exploring options for the digitalisated society, a climate-saving energy system and related services. Work together with some 7,600 colleagues: in one of the largest research centres in Europe and shape the change with us! In the Institute of Energy Technologies – Basics of Electrochemistry (IET-1) we are investigating highly topical topics relating to the energy transition and structural change. For example, we are dealing with the battery of the future and exploring new battery concepts. How to make the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) from the climate killer a raw material of the future is another exciting topic that we are dealing with. The aim of the research and development work is to provide low-cost batteries, fuel cells and electrolyzers with improved energy and performance density, longer life and maximum safety! Find out more about our mission and future projects: fz-juelich.de/de/iet/iet-1. We offer you an exciting Master thesis – Development of apparatus for the aftertreatment of electrolysis gases

Cost-related hurdles of storage technologies for renewable electricity are currently delaying the use of surplus electricity and the progress of the energy transition. By means of water electrolysis, the energy of excess current can be stored chemically in the form of water. The IET-1 of the Forschungszentrum Jülich has developed a favorable cell design for alkaline electrolysis, which reduces the use of resources and costs compared to the prior art. In addition, reduced system costs are desirable for the use of this design, which are linked to the gas aftertreatment of the water and acid produced. In gas aftertreatment, the recovery of water vapor and electrolyte aerosols as well as the thermal balancing are in the foreground. Technical aspects of heat exchangers and gas scrubbers are crucial for this, while the basic physicochemical layers of aerosol formation and their collection possibilities are largely unfounded in alkaline electrolysis. Your tasks in detail: You carry out experimental investigations into the aerosol formation of gases in contact with alkaline electrolytes. You characterize the thermal transfer and aerosol adsorption. You develop new methods and designs of aerosol adsorption apparatus. You develop systematic and creative solutions as well as ideas that lead to an optimised process for the gas aftertreatment of electrolysis systems.
