Research Assistant with PhD Opportunity - Software Architectures for Cyber-Physical Systems (m/f/d)

The teaching and research area software architecture was founded in April 2026 at the Faculty of Computer Science at RWTH Aachen. We are a group with close connection to the Chair of Software Engineering at RWTH and are investigating modern software architectures for various application areas with particular emphasis on cyber-physical systems. Our research combines classic concepts of software engineering and software architecture with modern, practice-oriented approaches in the fields of architecture decisions and knowledge management, microservices architectures, business processes, information systems, domain-driven design, devOps and generative AI/LLM support. We develop practical applications and prototypes of software architectures in the areas of cyber-physical systems and the Internet of Things, including sensors, different types of actuators, robots and manufacturing/production stations. You will work on the design and development of software architectures and a laboratory infrastructure in these areas, with particular emphasis on software-intensive cyber-physical systems and systems of systems. There are possibilities for doctoral studies in this area. The RWTH is certified as a family-friendly university. Your duties You are responsible for researching and developing modern software architectures for cyber-physical systems. These include research into the current state of the art, the development of new concepts and architectures, the implementation of prototypes, the implementation of experiments as well as the creation and presentation of research articles within the scope of your doctoral studies. Other tasks include: support of the research group during the construction phase, With the help of building and operating a laboratory infrastructure with robots, sensors and production stations (3D printers) for research and teaching. Acquisition of mandatory teaching tasks at Bachelor and Master level. The courses include aspects of software development, software architecture and software project management. Your profile Education: University degree (master or comparable) in Computer Science Methodological/conceptual knowledge: knowledge and background knowledge in software architecture and software development; Experience in the development of distributed systems, information systems or embedded systems Technical skills: mastery of object-oriented programming languages (e.g. Java, C#, Python). Experience with software modeling techniques and formalities (UML, SysML, BPMN). Experience with modern software development frameworks (e.g. Spring), tools (e.g. IntelliJ, Docker, Git), software engineering processes and AI-based coding tools. Passion for dripping on hardware. Soft Skills: Very good communication skills (orally and in writing) in English, team skills, willingness to accept teaching obligations.

The employment is in the employment relationship. The place shall be occupied at the next possible time and shall be limited to 3 years.
