AI assistants, large language models and agent systems for systems engineering and interactive, cross-domain 3D simulation (m/f/d)

Branch: Humanities Branch: Humanities

Artificial intelligence fundamentally changes how people work with complex software. At the MMI we develop multimodal AI assistants that lead domain experts through the complex processes and tasks in the context of systems engineering, modeling and simulation for a wide range of applications – from idea to system structure, modeling and simulation to evaluation. Instead of having to use a complex simulation interface, users describe their concerns naturally; the necessary simulation knowledge is provided by the assistant. Thus, simulation-based methods are also used for companies that have hitherto been lacking expertise or capacities. The focus is on the connection of multimodal large voice models and vision lane models with tool-specific knowledge about Retrieval-Augmented Generation, hybrid semantic search, embeddings and vector databases. In addition, secure, tool-based access to real applications via the Model Context Protocol with structured, schemavalid editions (constrained decoding), validation against metamodels and ontologies as well as guardrails to secure the system states. The framework is formed by agentic architectures that disassemble complex requests through reasoning and planning in hierarchical subtasks, orchestrate several specialized agents and solve them in the interaction of humans and agents (human and agent-in-the-loop). We are looking for a scientific co-worker / a scientific co-worker with a doctoral intent and strong interest in applied artificial intelligence: in LLM-based assistance and agent systems, in knowledge provision and in the connection of language models with real tools and 3D simulation models. The focus is on the development of virtually usable systems that support users productively. We offer: Possibility to doctorate in a highly topical research field at the interface of generic AI, agent systems, systems engineering and 3D simulation A full place (full-time, remuneration according to TV-L E13) Cooperation in a third-party funded research project with industrial partners and concrete application Development of sophisticated agentic AI systems (LLMs, RAG, Tool-Use/MCP, Multi-Agent-Orchestrierung), not only prototypical demonstrators Access to modern research infrastructure, own simulation tools and digital twins A creative, interdisciplinary research environment at RWTH Aachen, one of the leading technical universities and excellence universities in Europe Design space for own ideas and research directions Up to 40 % home office within the framework of an existing service agreement

About us: The Institute of Human Machine Interaction (MMI) is a nationally and internationally active and successful research institution in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the Rhine-Westphalian Technical University (RWTH) Aachen. The MMI is a specialist in modelling, simulation, control and analysis of complex systems in its application environment, for the interaction and networking of machines, devices and people, as well as for intelligent systems in space applications and on Earth. Digital twins realized at MMI revolutionize development processes and operation (not only) of robotic systems. They are the basis for the convergence of the virtual and real world – across industry and discipline. The diverse applications range from planetary over to modular satellite systems to the “International Space Station”, from industrial robots to “Virtuellen Produktion” and from wheel loaders to “Virtuellen Wald”. If you have any questions about the job or the project, we are happy to contact you – informal inquiries are expressly welcome. .
