Research for a society in change: This is our drive at the Forschungszentrum Jülich. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, we face the great social challenges of our time and explore interdisciplinary the digitized society, a climate-saving energy system and sustainable economy. Work together with nearly 7,700 colleagues in one of the largest research centres in Europe and shape the change with us! The Institute of Energy Technologies – Basics of Electrochemistry (IET‐1) deals with the scientific foundations of the development of powerful and resource-efficient materials and components for electrochemical energy storage and energy conversion. The aim of the research and development work is to provide low-cost batteries, fuel cells and electrolyzers with improved energy and performance density, longer life and maximum safety! These key technologies help to promote the energy transition and structural change in the Rhine region. Further information on our exciting projects: https://www.fz-juelich.de/de/iet/iet-1 Strengthen this range at the next time as PhD student:in – Production, Characterization and Application of New Electrodes for PEM Electrolysis (w/m/d)

Within the framework of a research project, new PFSA-free electrodes are to be developed for PEM-water electrolysis, which in terms of efficiency and stability are comparable to or exceed PFSA-based systems which are common today. A special focus is on the development and optimization of the production methods of porous transport electrodes (PTEs) for membrane electrode units (MEAs) as a central functional component of the PEM electrolyzer. Early work focuses on the production of PTE samples using different manufacturing techniques and parameters and their comprehensive characterization. Selected candidates are then to be examined for their cell performance in laboratory scale half-cell and cell tests and to be scaled to a size relevant to the application. The experimental findings are intended to explain the fundamental structure-effect relationships for the performance and stability of the electrolyzers with a PTE approach. Your tasks in detail: Processing (electrode coating) and optimization of porous transport electrodes (PTEs) for use with conventional and novel fluorine-free membranes in membrane electrode units (MEAs) Characterization of Electrochemical and Structural Properties of Self-Produced Samples Validation of performance in semi-cell and cell tests and comparison with reference systems Analysis of electrical and physicochemical performance indicators and derivation of structural, performance and stability relationships Scale from laboratory scale (4 – 25 cm2) to a cell size of 300 cm2 Planning and implementation of ex-situ characterizations (electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, etc.) on self-made samples and reference materials in cooperation with appropriate experts Presentation and publication of results in scientific lectures, dissertation and journals

above-average master's degree in chemistry, materials sciences, chemical or process engineering or a related field; with laboratory experience Basic knowledge of electrochemistry or impedance spectroscopy Ideally basic knowledge in the field of electrolyzers or fuel cells Basic programming skills (e.g. Python) are advantageous Self-employed and responsible work Motivation for careful experimental work in the laboratory and for data analysis and interpretation of scientific results High level of team capacity and joy in cooperative cooperation Very good English skills, both oral and written (at least B2 level after the GER), ideally proven by a certificate In addition, good German skills complete your profile
