We are looking for a highly motivated doctoral student for an innovative research project at the interface between computer science and clinical radiology, which aims to fundamentally change access to imaging data, their structuring and exploration in real health environments with a focus on lung diseases.

The project is embedded in a strong interdisciplinary cooperation between Medical Informatics, AI research and clinical practice. With access to multimodal patient data, including thorax x-ray images, CT/MRT scans, radiology findings, scanned patient letters and hospital IT systems, this project offers a unique opportunity to work on basic technologies with immediate clinical relevance.

This position is part of a long-term initiative to build the next generation of information infrastructures for radiology. You work closely with clinical partners and technical colleagues to develop intelligent systems that understand, retrieve and organize data on the basis of the real issues of radiologists. Development of multimodal, multilingual retrieval models for linking imaging data with free text findings, scanned clinical documents and patient letters to enable natural and intelligent information access Creation of query-controlled extraction pipelines for the structured preparation of reorganized clinical information, including support for clarifying queries and easier agent-based enrichment from external sources of knowledge Cooperation with Hospital IT services to integrate research results into clinical radiology systems (e.g. PACS / RIS) via modular APIs and embedded interfaces to enable real validation and feedback cycles Cooperation with university research activities, e.g. publication of scientific work and presentation of results at international conferences Support in academic teaching, e.g. support for students, participation in exercises or seminars in the field of medical computer science, AI or image processing

A master's degree (or equivalent) in computer science, medical computer science, computer linguistics or a related field Strong Interest in Information Retrieval, Natural Language Processing, Multimodal Machine Learning or Human Machine Interaction Experience with modern machine learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow), NLP libraries (e.g. Hugging Face) or medical imaging tools is recommended ability to work independently as well as interdisciplinary in the team, with good communication skills in English; German knowledge desirable
