Principal Engineer AI Services (w/m/d)

As a primary digitization partner of the Bundeswehr, we provide stable, safe and efficient IT services in Germany and abroad, from basic operations to the field close to the application and thus contribute to the continuous increase in the leadership and operational capacity of the Bundeswehr. With over 7,700 colleagues, we operate and modernise one of the largest and most complex IT infrastructures in Germany. We are looking for responsible IT specialists who are convinced that the Bundeswehr-IT will further develop in challenging digitalization projects and thus contribute to Germany's security. Together with us, you are worried about the future digital capability of the Bundeswehr. Principal Engineer AI Services (m/d) from now on and in full time at our BWI location in Berlin, alternatively in Munich. BWI's Chief Technology Office (CTO) is responsible for the strategic renewal of the performance portfolio. This includes the development and operation of the technical AI service by the Team Technology Management & Innovation (TM&I). The team implements a holistic DevSecOps approach along the entire Technologiestack. Our goal is to provide employees of BWI AI-based services and solutions and to establish a AI framework in the long term.

You take over the technical leadership of our AI service and work closely with the Technology Center AI to develop our AI strategy in a targeted manner – with the focus on scalable, practical and forward-looking internal solutions

Our AI infrastructure will actively shape you and introduce modern MLOps practices such as automation, CI/CD for ML models and monitoring to daily work – always taking into account regulatory requirements, such as the EU AI Act

You establish efficient process structures that enable the stable and sustainable operation of AI applications – taking care On technical excellence as well as on documented, auditable implementation

Furthermore, you assemble a powerful, interdisciplinary AI team and are responsible for its targeted further development – from the selection of suitable profiles to the integration into the existing team and structures

Last but not least, you promote the professional and personal development of your employees, including through tailor-made trainings, active mentoring and the establishment of an innovative, performance-oriented team culture

PhD or completed Master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or a comparable discipline

At least 7 years of relevant professional experience in the Data Science environment after completion of the study absolutely necessary

At least 4 years of experience in the professional management of engineering teams, such as Principal Engineer, Staff Engineer or as PM/PO for Platform or SaaS products with Budget/ROI responsibility

Experience throughout the AI/ML stack: deep knowledge in the development and implementation of AI models including the design of the data pipeline, training and deployment of models

Expertise in MLOps and infrastructure design: practical experience with automation, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring and versioning of AI models, ideally based on Kubernetes

Process optimization: Experience in designing efficient workflows, automation and resource management for stable, repeatable AI processes German language skills and very good English knowledge in word and writing

Through varied and socially relevant tasks, we ensure the smooth operation of IT and the digitization of the Bundeswehr
