Research Assistant (f/m/d) in Surface and Coating Technology PhD Student (f/m/d) Development of innovative coating processes with the help of simulations
The Institute of Surface Engineering (IOT) at RWTH Aachen University is a leader in research and development of joining and surface techniques. Our expertise includes industry-relevant technologies such as thermal spraying, Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD), application welding as well as hard and application soldering. Our dedicated and diverse team uses these technologies to develop innovative solutions for industry, environmental protection and resource conservation. Our approach is characterized by the range of basic research to practical implementation. The working day on the IOT includes the work in the team on technical questions. The practical training of our students and the industry-oriented and application-oriented research have a very high priority for us. The cohesion within the IOT team and also our former employees is highly appreciated, which is why we organize regular events such as summer festivals, excursions or a Christmas colloquium. In everyday life, our employees enjoy the common lunch break, content discussions and regular, cozy relaxation with cold drinks on Friday afternoon. You have the chance to actively shape current developments and innovative solutions in surface technology. As part of our open team you can participate at the top of industrial research. JOBV1_EN

Our projects focus on the analysis and further development of the thermic spraying with the help of simulations. The simulation models at the IOT, which have been developed for decades, are leading in the analysis and prediction in the thermic spraying. The methods used range from CFD simulations (Computational Fluid Dynamics) to finite element method (FEM) to newer approaches such as the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). These computer-assisted methods are used to simulate the entire coating process of the thermic spraying from the energy conversion in the burner to the acceleration and heating of the particles up to the layer structure and the corresponding layer properties. The latest work focused on plasma spraying (APS) and high-speed flame spraying (HVOF). Our simulative work is always coupled with experimental investigations to support the calculated results. Their task is to continue these very successful work and thus to understand and further develop the thermal spraying. The project work includes the following activities: Project management: They provide independent public and/or industrially funded research projects in the field of surface technology. This includes: Construction and development of simulation models based on CFD, FEM or SPH Planning and carrying out experimental investigations to secure and validate simulation results deriving insights into the targeted further development of coating methods and layer properties Development of new research ideas and their implementation in project applications
Scientific work: You develop scientific foundations and develop application-related solutions to current challenges in surface technology. Communication and Presentation: They present research results at national and international conferences and represent the Institute in specialist bodies and working groups. Teaching and training: Support for courses and practical exercises in the field of surface and coating technology to pass on your knowledge to students. Promotion: The doctorate is designed for 5 years. The first year is a qualification phase. The results for your doctoral thesis will be developed within your working hours in the projects. Can you identify yourself with the tasks and challenges? Then we're happy to meet you.
Academic qualification: You have completed your university studies (master or comparable) above-average in the degree programs Mechanical Engineering, Computational Engineering, Material Engineering, Material Science or a comparable discipline. Self-employment and initiative: Planning and implementing projects independently, actively addressing problems and developing innovative solutions are among your strengths. Team skills and communication skills: They are a team player and have excellent communicative skills, both in scientific exchange and in teaching. They are able to convey complex facts clearly and understandably. Language skills: You can control German and English fluently in word and writing, which allows you to communicate and publish at national and international levels. Problem solving capability: They are characterized by an analytical and targeted way of working, which allows you to efficiently solve complex problems. Technical knowledge: They have well-founded knowledge of mechanical engineering and materials engineering, ideally with practical experience in application to real problems, especially in the field of surface technology.
The employment is in the employment relationship. The place shall be occupied at the next possible time and shall be limited to 2 years. A fixed-term further employment for a total of 5 years with the aim of the promotion is envisaged. The temporary employment is carried out within the framework of the time-limits of the science-time contract law. It is a full-time job. There is a doctoral opportunity. The grouping depends on the TV-L. The place is rated with EG 13 TV-L. JOBV1_EN
