The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions in Germany and is one of the leading organisations for application-oriented research. Around 32 000 employees develop the annual research volume of 3.4 billion euros. The newly founded Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence Duisburg (ZaKI.D) aims to support the regional economy in the transformation in Duisburg and in the adjacent regions with promising AI technologies. Together with the University of Duisburg-Essen and KROHNE Messtechnik GmbH, we will help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through the pillars of SME support, education and training as well as AI innovation incubator to integrate artificial intelligence into their businesses and products. The technical focus of the ZaKI.D is the embedded artificial intelligence on resource-restricted devices such as sensors or smart devices. We want to make these safer and smarter, optimize manufacturing processes, increase the quality of products and minimize the ecological footprint.

Together with the department management, you define the thematic focus of your newly founded group, with potential focal points being Generative AI/LLMs, Reinforcement Learning, Explainable AI or Dependability for Embedded Systems. On this basis, you identify the necessary skills for your employees, build your team together with the HR department and develop it in a targeted manner. Through the ZAKI.D project you already have a good financial basis for your group. In addition, you acquire public and industrial projects and secure the financing of your group by building an international network of industrial partners, contracting authorities and universities. You coordinate the ongoing projects within your group, present the project results at conferences, trade fairs, committees, project partners and external customers as well as in the form of scientific publications. In addition, you will support the young scientists from doctoral students to student and scientific assistants.

Complete scientific studies (M.
