In the OP area, teamwork is especially important. The common goal: the best possible care for patients. The anaesthetic assistant (ATA) assists the patients before and after surgery in the surgery room and in the wake-up room. He prepares all workflows necessary for the execution of anesthesia and assists the anesthetist. Prerequisites for carrying out this responsible activity are a great expertise and a high level of empathy. The necessary expertise is obtained by the ATA as part of its three-year training. Practical training (3,000 hours) takes place in our house. The theoretical training (1,600 hours in blocks) is carried out at the Hamburg School for Health and Nursing. The conclusion is an oral, written and practical examination in accordance with the guidelines of the German Hospital Society (DKG).

During the practical part of the training in the Marienkrankenhaus, it is possible to complete applications in orthopaedics, gynecology and other optional operations. The theoretical teaching includes the core tasks of the ATA (e.g. hygiene, pain therapy), special tasks of the ATA (e.g. anaesthesia assistance), training and professional situations (e.g. communication, team work) and legal framework conditions.

Requirements for training

• Minimum age 18 years at the beginning of training
• Real school or equivalent completed schooling
• Main school qualification in connection with vocational training or permission as a nurse Senior Caregiver
• a two- to four-week internship in anaesthesia, also with us in the surgery area in the Marienkrankenhaus
• health suitability for the profession
• physically and mentally resilient
• Willingness to work in large teams, independent action
