Number: MER0003Z2I Being part of Mercedes-Benz means not only building cars, but rethinking mobility. In Group Research & Development, we are working on the vehicle generations of tomorrow – and for this we need simulations that do not follow reality. You want to dip deep into data and develop algorithms that make the difference? Then you're right with us. Your mission: “clean” laboratory data We face an exciting challenge: our current simulations are based on speed data from card providers. Although these provide correct average values, You often act as “smooth” and artificial. What is missing is life on the road: the natural swimming in the traffic, the short braking when the front man hesitates, or the typical oscillations in the stop-and-go. Your goal is to return this “human imperfection” to our data. You develop a method that enriches static speed profiles so that You feel like a real ride. This is crucial for raising our development simulations to the next level. Your tasks in detail: You take responsibility for a concrete research project with direct practical relevance:
Deep Dive in real data: You analyze extensive datasets from real trips and identify the characteristic patterns of human driving behavior (e.g. acceleration noise, delay phases)
Algorithm development: You unleash creative approaches (e.g. stochastic models or machine learning) to transfer these patterns to smoothed map data
Prototyping: You implement your methodology in Python and integrate it into our existing tool chain
Validation: You can start your simulation against reality. Using comparison drives, you evaluate how well your model displays typical driving dynamics such as traffic stoppages or traffic flow fluctuations
Optimization: You will refine your parameters until the simulated speed profile is barely different from a real measuring drive
Result: You document your findings and present them to our team of experts – your work does not land in the drawer, but flows directly into the development
The final topics will be discussed with the university, you and us. The activity can begin from April 2026.
We do not seek single fighters, but smart heads who love technology and data: Education: You study computer science, mechanical engineering (vehicle technology), physics, mathematics, data science or a comparable degree course
Tech-Stack: You are fit in Python (Pandas, NumPy, SciPy)
Know-how: You ideally have first experiences in signal processing, time series analysis or machine learning
Mindset: You have fun to mathematically describe complex phenomena and don't be afraid of large amounts of data
Language: You can communicate safely in German and English
Why us? Because you not only cook coffee with us, but work on a real problem that advances our simulation methods. We offer you the data, mentoring and freedom to develop your own solution – in a team that lives innovation. Are you ready to let the simulation become reality? Then we look forward to your application! Additional information: We are looking forward to your online application with CV, lettering, certificates, current enrollment certificate, giving the semester and proof of the regular study period.
