Magnets based on normal line and low temperature superconductors are currently used at the GSI and FAIR. Superconducting accelerator magnets based on high-temperature superconductors (HTS) are a key for future accelerator systems both in terms of magnetic power and power consumption. At the existing GSI system HHT, for example, a normally conductive quadrupole magnet with a small aperture, which limits the power of the system, is to be converted by a superconducting HTS system with a large aperture. The aim is to develop such a new HTS magnet system. The job owner*in will work on the electromagnetic design of the quadrupole magnets with HTS technology and will write a promotion on the basis of the project results. The project is conducted under the supervision of GSI experts and in cooperation with partners from industry and/or science. One or more of the following topics will be dealt with on your initiative, and other topics will be dealt with in cooperation: Electromagnetic design of the HTS magnets including design of a prototype coil. Construction of the HTS magnet: thermomechanical simulations, definition of instrumentation, cryoengineering. Creation of production drawings of the magnetic system. Production line of the coils and the magnet. Testing the prototype coil and the magnet both at room temperature and under cryogenic conditions. Evaluation of the magnetic performance and documentation of the test results. Creation of technical documentation Coordination of technical structures, experts from other specialist departments or cooperation partners.

University degree (M.Sc.) in physics or applied physics. Advanced knowledge in at least one of the fields of mechanical engineering, cryotechnology, electrical engineering or comparable fields. Structured working with a high degree of self-initiative and motivation Good team and communication skills English language skills in word and writing, German language skills (B1/B2) are desirable Ideally experience in coordinating test activities Experiences in the field of superconductive magnetic technology and relevant technical systems and disciplines are advantageous and preferred to evaluate: (superconductive) magnetic technology: coil design, mechanical design and design, cooling techniques, instrumentation, quench detection and magnetic protection, electrical operation, electrical integrity (bswp. high-voltage strength). cryotechnology (thermomechanics) and low temperature physics Software CAD (e.g. CATIA) FEM (for example ANSYS for thermal and mechanical analyses)

A versatile, varied and demanding activity with interesting and diverse tasks. Teamwork and the will for training are essential for us. GSI continues to offer various offers for the reconciliation of family and profession, mobile work, offers in the field of occupational health management, occupational social consultation offers, personal training and qualification offers, job-ticket, benefits for supplementary pensions, additional business leisure, as well as an “Schnelle ion” business sports association. The place is limited to 3 years. The salary is based on the TVöD collective agreement (Bund). GSI promotes the professional development of women and welcomes women to feel particularly addressed by the call for proposals. Highly disabled persons receive the benefit of the same qualification. .
