Engineer – Al alloys under the influence of hydrogen at cryogenic temperatures (m/f/d)
Helmholtz-Centre Hereon The Helmholtz-Centre Hereon conducts top international research for a world of change: Around 1,000 employees contribute to addressing climate change, the sustainable use of world-wide coastal systems and the resource-compatible increase in quality of life. The interdisciplinary research spectrum covers a unique range from basic understanding to practical application. Institute of Materials Physics The Institute of Materials Physics operates instruments at large equipment for structural testing of materials and works on the development and characterisation of novel Lightweight materials for High-temperature applications, for example, in aircraft turbines and automobile engines. Hereon is a world-wide unique infrastructure for complementary material research with photons and neutrons. Engineer (m/w/d) – Al alloys under the influence of hydrogen at cryogenic temperatures Reference code: 2026/WP 3 – 1021 Place of work: Hamburg Application deadline: 05.07.2026 The Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon operates an office at DESY in Hamburg and provides users from research and industry access to highly brilliant X-rays at the instruments of the German Engineering Materials Science Center (GEMS). At the PETRA III storage ring, Hereon operates the High Energy Materials Science Beamline (P07/HEMS; common with DESY), the White Beam Engineering Materials Science Beamline (P61A/WINE), the lmaging Beamline (P05/IBL) and the Nanofocus measurement site at the Micro- and Nanofocus X-ray Scattering Beamline (P03/MINAXS), and supporting laboratories. The diffraction techniques we offer have a strong focus on engineering research in materials. The high intensity of X-ray radiation at high energies enables rapid in situ measurements, scanning of large samples and high spatial resolution. For many studies, complex sample environments are required, which we operate in cooperation with the users of our plants. As part of a project funded by the BMWE, we want to jointly examine the mechanical properties of Al alloys under the influence of hydrogen at cryogenic temperatures. To this end, a sample environment is to be developed which allows tensile tests on samples at low temperatures. For this challenging project we are looking for a person who is motivated to develop solutions in a team of scientists, engineers and technicians. There is also support from our technician at the Hereon main location in Geesthacht. The contract is limited to 2 years. The job is to be filled in full time (39 h/week). Equal opportunities is an important part of our staff policy. We would therefore like to encourage qualified women to apply. .
