Research Assistant - Learning Analytics & Empirical Educational Research - How do students learn in digital teaching and examination scenarios? (m/f/d)

The Center for Teaching and Learning Services (CLS) is the central scientific institution of RWTH Aachen University for the further development and research of teaching, learning and testing. Around 70 employees work in an interdisciplinary manner at the CLS interface of university teaching, digitalization and empirical research. A central concern of the CLS is to make learning processes visible: How do students use digital teaching and examination offers? What strategies do You develop? How do teachers react to data feedback? And what does all this mean for the design of good teaching? In order to answer these questions, the CLS systematically uses methods from learning analytics and quantitative educational research and combines scientific knowledge interests with the further development of real systems in everyday university life. The RWTH is certified as a family-friendly university. RWTH offers a variety of health, counselling and prevention services (e.g. university sports) as part of a university health management. Empirical study of learning and processing processes based on quantitative usage data of students and teachers. Analysis of questions such as: How do students process tasks in electronic exams – linear or strategic? What indications do processing times, changes of tasks or changes in response to learning and problem solving strategies? How do teachers change task formats when data-based hints are available for unexpected tasks or content misunderstandings? Development and implementation of Python-based analyses for the POLARIS Learning Analytics system, which is in productive use at RWTH Aachen University. Linking empirical results with findings from teaching-learning research. Scientific preparation of results in the form of reports, presentations and publications. Participation in the conceptual development of the research and evaluation activities of the CLS in the area of Learning Analytics.

Your profile You are curious about how learning actually takes place – not only theoretically, but on the basis of real data from authentic learning and examination situations. You have the pleasure of discovering patterns, developing hypotheses and checking them empirically. In addition, you have: a completed university degree (master or comparable), for example in psychology, education, computer science, data science, statistics or a related subject, strong interest in learning processes, learning strategies and learning behaviour in the context of higher education; experience or strong curiosity in the field of quantitative empirical research, very good knowledge of the analysis of data (e.g. statistics, log data, behavioral data), good software knowledge for data processing and analysis, interest in learning analytics, educational data mining or adjacent research fields, the ability to interpret analytical results in an understandable way and to classify them in a didactic context. You will be happy to work in interdisciplinary teams and bring your competencies to fruition. You bring very good knowledge of German and English.

The employment is in the employment relationship. The place shall be occupied at the next possible time and shall be limited to 3 years. The temporary employment is carried out within the framework of the time-limits of the science-time contract law. It is a full-time job. There is a doctoral opportunity.
