Research Assistant (m/f/d)

Branch: Teaching and training Branch: Teaching and training

Supplier: Chair of power plant technology, steam and gas turbines and Institute of Steam and gas turbines The Institute for Power Plant Technology, Steam and Gas Turbine (IKDG) of RWTH Aachen is a leading university institute in the field of the investigation of innovative processes using turbomachines in future regenerative-dominated energy systems. We highlight the future challenges in the energy sector from different perspectives: from model-based analysis and optimization of new energy wall systems to detailed design and investigation of turbomachines on a numerical and experimental basis. The institute focuses on experimental research projects on turbomachines, which are carried out in close cooperation with industrial companies. Current research topics include heat transfer tests on turbochargers, vibration tests on turbine blades, aerodynamic testing of radial compressors and combustion chamber tests with hydrogen. The IKDG is distinguished by the operation of several own large-scale test benches. In order to strengthen our experimental team within the framework of the newly launched research project HyCAT-HP-Lab (Laboratoy for Hydrogen Combustion using Advanced Technologies at High Pressure), we are looking for a scientific assistant (w/m/d). The RWTH is certified as a family-friendly university. RWTH offers a variety of health, counselling and prevention services (e.g. university sports) as part of a university health management. There is a wide range of training and the possibility of obtaining a job ticket for employees and civil servants. .

The focus of your activity is the experimental investigation of hydrogen and hydrogen/earth gas combustion in gas turbines. You actively contribute to the development and development of a modern research infrastructure. The project offers the opportunity to participate in a Europe-wide outstanding test stand that is specifically designed for the investigation of hydrogen combustion processes under realistic conditions. A central part of your work is the planning, implementation and evaluation of experiments on complex experimental plants. In the course of the project, you are also involved in the commissioning and further development of the test stand, which allows you to actively shape the experimental infrastructure. In particular, topics such as emission formation, flashback and thermoacoustic instabilities are at the forefront. In addition, depending on the interest, you can also contribute to the numerical analysis and modeling. You work closely in the team with other scientific staff, technical specialists and national and international project partners from science and industry. A structured incorporation and continuous professional support are of course provided. Working in an interdisciplinary research project on hydrogen combustion in gas turbines Planning, implementation and evaluation of experimental investigations at the combustion chamber test bench Support in building and developing the experimental infrastructure Analysis and interpretation of measurement results and derivation of scientific findings Presentation of results in project meetings and specialist conferences Possibility to participate in numerical investigations Scientific qualification and promotion in the subject area.

Above-average degree of academic higher education (master or comparable) in the field of mechanical engineering, preferably energy technology, aerospace technology or related fields Interest in experimental research and in working with complex technical experimental plants Basic knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics or combustion Knowledge of data processing, measurement (e.g. LabView) or programming (Matlab/Python) are advantageous Structured and independent working as well as team skills and communication strength Craft skills and motivation to work on new topics
