At the National Testing Centre for Unmanned Aerospace Systems, open questions are explored across disciplines and solutions are brought to demonstration / application maturity. The test centre is therefore a critical enabler for research and industry in the development of new technologies in the field of UAS and in the field of innovative/ advanced air mobility. An important component here is the combination of a conventional airport operation with the testing and demonstration of UAS technologies that are being carried out in Cochstedt. With the testing centre, DLR operates a highly innovative and unique research infrastructure in Europe.

As part of the project acquisitions and preparation, the Campaign and Project Management department is an external interface for potential users of the facility and connects with customers and third-party partners. Furthermore, the department has the responsibility for the preparation and support of campaigns, from supply creation to the clarification of the necessary test framework conditions in the field of flight areas and necessary infrastructures to on-site maintenance. In addition to technologies from the “classical” aviation and UAS field, new and future technologies from space, such as Galileo services, weather observation, quantum navigation, etc., are also suitable for use and further development in the UAS field. The aim is to create possibilities for testing by means of UAS for the field of quantum technologies. The described site is characterized in that it is intended to build a conceptual bridge between UAS and space technologies. Once the first implementation options have been identified, first projects in the field of space (applications) will also be acquired.
