The ZRE Center for Resources and Energy GmbH (ZRE) at the Borsigstraße site is a plant for the thermal recovery of waste in the East of Hamburg and a 100% subsidiary of the City Cleaning Hamburg AöR. The plant serves primarily for the environmentally sound and safe disposal of municipal waste from Hamburg. In addition to the safety of disposal, the energy obtained is used in the form of steam and a separate district heating connection with the aid of large heat pumps and flue gas condensation for the district heating supply of the Hamburg households. The ZRE thus takes on a nationwide pioneer in the field of energy recovery.

In addition, the ZRE operates a biomass power plant for the recovery of old wood. The energy obtained is fed into the respective Hamburg supply networks in the form of electricity and heat generated in the combined heat and power.
