At the University Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH), the Institute for Transfusion Medicine carries out over 200 aphereseses per year to obtain hematopoietic stem cells from the peripheral blood of donors, patients and more than 50 aphereseseses in patients to obtain leukocytes for the CAR-T cell production. The apheresis processes are often carried out with an extracorporeal blood circulation via central venous catheters and are most likely comparable to a dialysis. In addition to the existing stem cell athesis unit in the Dr. Mildred-Scheel-Haus on Campus Kiel, a stem cell athesis unit is to be built up on Campus Lübeck to expand the capacities.
