Research Assistant in the Field of Numerical Simulation and Machine Learning for Electrical Machines (m/f/d)

Branch: Teaching and training Branch: Teaching and training

Supplier: Chair of Electrical Machines and Drives and Institute of Electrical Machines The Institute of Electrical Machines (IEM) with the Chair of Electrical Machines and Drives at RWTH Aachen University is at the forefront of innovation and research in the field of electrical machinery and drive technology. With an impressive range of research projects, which are supported both publicly and industrially, the IEM Hand works in hand with renowned companies and research institutions. These cooperations extend over a wide range of industries – from industrial applications to the automotive industry to regenerative energy production – thus ensuring the relevance and practicality of our research work. Our approach is fundamentally interdisciplinary, innovative, and aims to explore the entire spectrum of the electric drive system – from the machine to the control algorithms to system integration. This allows us to develop the full potential of technology and explore drive systems that are not only powerful and efficient, but also sustainable and durable. Our team-oriented working style promotes an environment in which scientific work thrives with passion, self-responsibility and creativity. At the IEM you are part of a dynamic team that strives to shape the future of electric machines and drives. In our current research projects, we are increasingly devoting ourselves to the interface between classical theoretical electrical engineering and modern machine learning methods in order to model highly complex physical phenomena precisely and in a computation-efficient manner. The RWTH is certified as a family-friendly university. RWTH offers a variety of health, counselling and prevention services (e.g. university sports) as part of a university health management. There is a wide range of training and the possibility of obtaining a job ticket for employees and civil servants. .

You will contribute to the development and optimization of numerical simulation methods for electrical machines and drive systems and play a central role in our research initiatives. Material and system modeling: Development and implementation of advanced models for the precise detection of complex physical effects (e.g. in the field of electromagnetics and materials science) for electrical machines. New numerical methods: Development of innovative numerical approaches (such as homogenization methods) to solve multiscale problems with a computational efficiency. Artificial intelligence and machine learning:Integration of AI methods for the development of physical-informed models. You translate complex physical relationships into fast, practical tools for macro simulation. Innovative technologies: the use and development of innovative numerical techniques and tools to achieve significant accelerations and improvements in the design process of electric motors. Validation:Validation of the developed simulation methods and models by experimental results at our modern test stands.

Academic studies in electrical engineering, physics, applied mathematics, computer science, mechanical engineering or a comparable degree course (master or comparable), very good knowledge in the field of numerical simulation and theoretical electrical engineering, ideally with prior knowledge in modeling complex material effects and loss mechanisms, sound knowledge of numerical simulation methods, programming (e.g. Python, C++, C, Rust) and finite element analysis (FEA), practical experience in the field of artificial intelligence/machine learning as well as in the handling of appropriate frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow), team capacity, initiative and a high motivation for scientific work on demanding, multiphysical issues, pronounced analytical skills and creative problem-solving capacity, safe occurrence, mastery of the German and English language, certainly in word and writing.

The IEM offers its employees: A position at the top of technological development with the possibility of configuring the future of electric drive technology, a creative and inspiring working environment that promotes self-responsibility and innovation, access to advanced research facilities and technologies, institut own computer cluster with the associated software licenses, mechanical and electronic workshop for design, an international network of industrial partners and research institutions, the possibility of promotion and professional development. Our offer The employment is in the employment relationship. The place shall be occupied at the earliest possible date and shall be fixed for 1 year.
