With Mercedes-Benz AG, the vehicle manufacturer is one of the largest providers of premium and luxury cars and vans. The BodyTEC Center bears the end-to-end responsibility for the production of body parts such as side walls, doors, hoods, fenders etc. This includes all process steps from the development of the forming tools to the production in the press. In this context, the team Technology Development Tool Building deals with cross-disciplinary topics. The laser-based Direct Energy Deposition (L-DED) method has already established itself as a flexible additive manufacturing method for shape changes and repairs in the field of the production of forming tools for the production of vehicle body sheet metal parts. As a new approach, the hybrid additive manufacturing of complete tool components is investigated by means of L-DED. The further development of this innovative production technology in terms of quality assurance of the welding process is the goal of this master thesis and generates new applications. These challenges include: Literature research on the subject Planning and implementation of basic experiments Analysis of material technology to investigate possible component defects Investigation of the relationship between the results of metallographic evaluation and the welding strategy used Hybrid additive construction of a cutting blade Geometric examination of the cutting blade with respect to contour accuracy compared to previous welding tests Documentation and presentation of results The final topics will be discussed with the university, you and us. The master thesis can start from September 2025.
