The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research is a research facility supported by the Federal Republic of Germany, the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and the Länder of Brandenburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony with around 1,400 employees. In a broad multidisciplinary approach, we conduct polar and marine research and, in conjunction with numerous university and non-university research institutions, make an important contribution to global environmental, earth system and paleoclimate research. Software Developer:in Focus on Frontend Development (w/m/d/x) Background Data and information from ocean observation are of great importance to identify the state of the seas, to understand the dynamic processes in the sea and to distinguish short-term changes from long-term trends and to gain knowledge of action. There is a great scientific and social interest in knowledge, but in many cases there is a lack of the possibility of collecting data in sufficient spatial and temporal density. Solid measurement networks and research trips only cover a fraction of the measurements actually necessary.

Within the framework of the Helmholtz Innovation Platform SOOP, the Working Group (AG) Open Research Technologies at the AWI has developed with the Open Source Building Kit (OSBK) a modular, open-source modular system for measurement solutions that enables professional researchers and lay people to perform measurements according to good standards. With OSBK-based products and participation formats, we want to enable broad social participation in ocean observation, to create knowledge of action and to promote the use of the marine observation data obtained. The establishment of active measuring networks outside the traditional scientific field is to be made possible and promoted.

We are looking for a:n software developer:in which:with us these tasks are concerned with commitment and fun and the team is stepping up in the development of good frontends.

Tasks of the Working Group The OSBK module provides basic technologies that enable the implementation and use of measurement systems and measurement solutions (e.g. measuring networks with many participants) as simple as possible, according to good standards, but cost-effective and low-swelling: hardware modules that enable plug-NRun integration of the sensor system, an app as a mobile interface of the users to the measuring system and to the measuring network, as well as the data node as the communication instance and the data upload. Data nodes and app enable active participation in the measurement network by means of notifications and bidirectional communication (including by means of Mastodon ActivityPub). The kit is completely open source (gitlab.awi.de/osbk). The app is to be extended by other functions that enable targeted measurement requests and agreements in the network network.

The AG is currently developing products tailored to specific applications (measuring probe for sailors, ship box, school xperimentier box) that enable the desired participation and interaction.

You design, design and develop software components of the Open Source Building Kit with a focus on frontend/user interface. In the team with software and electronics developers: in close cooperation with AG Open Research Technologies, the Software Engineering department and with scientific and non-scientific users, the frontends are developed and optimized in a user-oriented manner. Extensions of our products (WebApp/App, DataNode, Hub) are tested and developed in specific applications.

Cooperation in the development of a modular, open-source modular system for measurement systems and measurement solutions (OSBK) Cooperation in the development of OSBK-based products that enable low-swelling participation in marine observation, as well as the establishment of an online platform that enables participation Conception, design and development of software components of the Open Source Building Kit with focus on front end/user interface Optimization of the benefit interfaces to ensure efficient use (including through a standardized design and operating concept) and a coordinated functioning as a whole system Conception, design and development of software components for OSBK-based products (such as measurement probe for sailors, ship box, school xperimentierkasten) developed by AG Offene Forschungstechnologies prototypically Implementation of product and usage-specific extensions of OSBK software modules (WebApp/App, Data Node, Hub) as well as the development of new software modules and web applications

Master's degree in Computer Science or in a comparable degree course Expert knowledge in front-end development (UI/UX, design, user interaction) Found experience in the development of UI modules and frontends for various end devices with JavaScript, HTML, CSS Found experience with frameworks such as Bootstrap, Vue.js and build tools such as Vite Knowledge in Java with Maven and Python as well as experience in the development of databases (SQL, PostgreSQL) are beneficial Self-working and self-initiative A cooperative attitude and the ability to work together successfully with an interdisciplinary team Creative and innovative working methods, enthusiasm for new technologies Passion for the needs of users and experience in developing user-centric products Very good knowledge of German and English (according to CEFR level C1)

A meaningful activity in an internationally leading research institute contributing to the understanding of oceans, climate and polar regions A versatile working environment at the interface of science, technology and administration Flexible working hours and the possibility of mobile working up to 50% of regular working hours Opportunities for professional and personal development 30 Holiday days (for full time) and additional free days on 24.12. and 31.12. Special payment according to TVöD Bund Business health promotion and corporate fitness with Hansefit Support offers and a living culture for the reconciliation of work and family, e.g. by our family office with childcare services (e.g. holiday programme) and advice on family and nursing tasks Occupational pension (VBL)
