Number: MER0003PSY Mercedes-Benz Group AG is one of the most successful automotive companies worldwide and known for its premium and luxury cars and vans. As a pioneer in the industry, Mercedes-Benz continues to engage intensively in the development of efficient drive systems and thus paves the way for a fully electric future. Our goal is to reduce CO2 emissions per passenger car in the new vehicle fleet over the entire life cycle by the end of this decade to up to 50 percent. In parallel, we prioritise the intelligent networking of our vehicles, autonomous driving and innovative mobility concepts as well as thermal management systems, as we consider it our duty to fulfill our responsibility towards society and the environment. Motivation: As part of the increase in efficiency of our vehicles, vehicle air conditioning plays an important role as a very large secondary consumer. In order to evaluate innovations, both the experiment in the climate wind tunnel and the simulation (CFD/thermal comfort) are used in the development process. A good comparability of the results of both tools is absolutely necessary for a hand-in-hand development. While special ceiling flooders are currently being used in the climate channel to simulate the solar load on the vehicle in summer load cases, the simulation usually simulates the “real” sun at its very long distance. This different type of simulation results in differences. For the imaging of the ceiling flooders of the climate wind tunnel in the CFD simulation, there are simulation models to achieve better comparability measurement/simulation. These simulation models for imaging the ceiling flooders already exist from previous internal investigations. However, the new type of modelling results in deviations in the influences on the vehicle cabin. In the context of the work, these deviations are to be examined by modelling and the quality of prediction is to be raised to a higher level. These challenges come to you: Introduction to the topic by studying relevant literature and others Solar radiation and radiation modeling in the CFD software Star-CCM+ Analysis of pre-examinations and existing simulation models, as well as identification of possible causes leading to deviations
Develop solutions to minimize deviations
Implementation of the developed measures in simulation models, possibly on a simplified sub-model
Implementation of simulations and analysis of results
deriving measures for better modelling
Development of an existing Java script for flood integration in simulation models
Finally, the documentation of the work results and a view of possible further research steps are carried out.
This work student activity offers a unique opportunity to work at the interface of research and practice and to make a valuable contribution to vehicle development. The work student activity can start from September 2025.
Experience in the application of Star-CCM+, ideally also knowledge in JAVA
Basic knowledge of Linux and the Office Tool
Good knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics
readiness to carry out measurements with strong sunlight
Enthusiasm, self-initiative, structured working, team capacity, communication skills and contact
