Research Assistant - Postdoctoral Researcher in the Field of Computer Vision and AI for Transport and Infrastructure (m/f/d)
At RWTH Aachen University's Institute for Road Transport, we develop solutions for safe, efficient and intelligent road infrastructure. Our research combines road safety, sensor technology and digitalization. The enrolled site deals with computer vision and artificial intelligence for the analysis of traffic and infrastructure based on camera and multimodal sensor data. With video, thermalography and other sensor systems, we investigate vehicles, pedestrians, cycling, trajectories, interactions and safety-relevant events. The aim is to transfer complex sensor data into resilient engineering knowledge for the assessment of traffic safety, infrastructure monitoring and digital road systems. The RWTH is certified as a family-friendly university. RWTH offers a variety of health, counselling and prevention services (e.g. university sports) as part of a university health management. There is a wide range of training and the possibility of obtaining a job ticket for employees and civil servants. .

The site offers the opportunity to develop own methods in the field of computer vision and artificial intelligence for the analysis of traffic participants, traffic scenes and infrastructure from video and multimodal sensor data. These include, in particular, detection, tracking, scene understanding, trajectory reconstruction, interaction analysis and automated interpretation of traffic situations. Depending on the profile, the work can also comprise the visual modeling of traffic participants, in particular pedestrians and cyclists, for example in relation to movement, posture, behavior and avatar-based representations. A person who develops his own algorithms and develops robust processing pipelines for scientific and engineering applications is sought. The developed methods are designed to support practical applications in road safety assessment, infrastructure monitoring and digital road systems. The body also offers the opportunity to develop new research topics and to translate them into funded projects. For ambitious candidates, a successful recruitment of projects can also allow a team to build up in this field. The tasks also include the publication of scientific results and the support of students. We offer a challenging research center at the interface of transport infrastructure and artificial intelligence, with access to real traffic data and modern sensor systems. The site offers space, its own methods and software to develop, publish scientifically at a high level and build an independent scientific profile. You participate in new projects from the outset, contribute to the development of this research area at ISAC and are involved in national and international research activities. For ambitious candidates, a successful recruitment of projects can also allow a team to build up in this field.
You have a PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Transport Engineering or a related field. We are looking for candidates with very good programming skills and a strong methodological basis capable of developing their own solutions and not only applying existing software packages. Very good practical experience in programming languages such as Python, C++ or comparable languages is required. Experience in computer vision, machine learning or related areas is assumed. Experience in object detection, tracking, trajectory analysis, multimodal sensory, scene understanding, pose estimation, motion analysis or visual modeling of traffic participants is advantageous. Experience in the development of research applications or a strong interest in it is expressly welcome. Self-employed work and the ability to cooperate in an interdisciplinary environment are assumed. Very good English skills are required. German knowledge is desirable, the willingness to develop it is welcome.
