Research Assistant – PhD/PostDoc in the DigiFab project in the Cluster of Excellence CARE – Robotics, Automation and Digital Concrete Fabrication (m/f/d)

The Institute for Massivbau (IMB) at RWTH Aachen University is one of the leading research institutions in the field of digital, material-efficient and automated concrete construction. The focus is on robotic manufacturing processes, carbon concrete, pretension, adaptive construction, modular structures and modern digital testing and manufacturing technology. The IMB is currently building the world's unique research infrastructure DigiFab – a multimodal production system for the digital construction production of the future, which explores the digital, serial and automated production of innovative concrete components. DigiFab combines additive, subtractive and assembling processes (extrusion, spray concrete, milling, water jet cutting, gripping, welding, automated concrete and prestressing in an immediate combination) and is a key component for developing a new generation of resource-efficient concrete structures. The research infrastructure is developed and operated in close cooperation with the Excellence Cluster EXC 3115 “Climate Neutral and Resource Efficient Construction (CARE)”. DigiFab is a central technological platform for the cluster and will enable completely new national and international research projects in the field of climate-neutral construction. In addition to research, IMB is heavily involved in teaching. Every year, around 1,000 students from various engineering studies are trained and supervised. Your duties As a key role in the DigiFab management team, you will actively participate in the digital concrete production of the future. In particular, You take over: Scientific and Technical Development Conception, specification and further development of DigiFab as a multimodal production system Development of system architecture (robotics, PLC, actuators, sensors, tooling, portal systems, etc.) Building digital twins, simulations and process models Procurement & implementation Planning, organisation and implementation of complete procurement (Lastenheft, invitation to tender, tender evaluation, awarding, acceptance processes, etc.) technical support for production, delivery, assembly and commissioning Integration of all subsystems (robots, concrete pumps, laser measurement technology, prestressing systems, hall portal cranes, etc.) Research and Business Concept Development of a comprehensive research, operational and usage concept and a security concept for DigiFab in the context of the Cluster of Excellence CARE independent research in the field of digital manufacturing, automation and resource-efficient concrete construction Publication in leading national and international journals and conferences Teaching & scientific further qualification Implementation of selected courses (i.e. R. 4 SWS) Support for Bachelor and Master's thesis sustainable development of digital and experimental teaching formats Promotion or habilitation Due to the scientific depth, the technological novelty and the uniqueness of the research infrastructure, a doctorate or habilitation is explicitly provided and is actively supported.

Your profile Prerequisite for setting is the doctorate or an above-average degree (master or comparable) in: Robotics Automation Technology/Electronic Technology Production Technology/Machine Construction Civil engineering with focus on digital manufacturing or a natural or engineering discipline with comparable orientation In addition, you have: well-founded knowledge of industrial robotics, railway planning and system integration Experience with PLC, control and control technology Understanding industrial plant development, special machine construction or complex production systems ideally knowledge in the field of digital concrete manufacturing (additive and subtractive processes, automated concrete, etc.) analytical thinking, structured working and a pronounced technical system understanding very good communication skills in interdisciplinary contexts and experience in negotiation Joy of interdisciplinary cooperation and innovation at the interface of civil engineering, mechanical engineering and digitalization A strong self-responsibility combined with a proactive method very good knowledge of German and English the willingness to travel (to manufacturers, system integrators, research partners, etc.)
