Life is always about becoming... In life it is about going on a journey to become the best version of our future self. As we discover new things, we face challenges, master them and grow beyond us.
Apply to Mercedes-Benz and find the area where you can develop your talents individually. You will be supported by visionary colleagues who share your pioneering spirit. Joining us means becoming part of a global team whose goal is to build the most desirable cars in the world. Together for excellence.
Number: MER00047QX In the Team Design Engineering, Forming and Joining Technology Axis we design the manufacturing technologies that will shape the production of coming vehicle generations. Our focus is on modern track and arc welding processes for chassis and structural components – with the aim of continuously increasing quality, efficiency and flexibility in production. In close cooperation with the production areas, we develop new technologies from the first idea to the robust series application and thus advance measurable progress in production.
In the field of automated welding seam testing, we are currently addressing the question of how image data can be used for reliable quality assessment using modern methods of image processing and artificial intelligence. The aim is to automatically detect characteristic features of welds and to derive a sound IO/NIO classification from them.
In our project you work on a practical question at the interface of production, image processing and artificial intelligence. High-resolution recordings of welds and components from real manufacturing processes are available for analysis. The relevant image areas are already extracted and processed automatically from production data.
On this basis, a neural network is to be developed, which recognizes vulnerabilities in the image data and enables reliable quality assessment. The aim is to develop a first KI prototype that shows the potential of data-driven assistance systems for future production processes.
Your tasks include: Processing in industrial image processing, automated welding seam inspection and machine learning and neural networks
Analysis, preparation and evaluation of existing image data of welds and components
Combining image data and associated IO/NIO evaluations as a basis for model training
Creation of suitable training, validation and test data sets
Development, training and comparison of different computer vision and deep learning models
Development of concepts for improving model robotics
Assessment and validation of models based on appropriate indicators and analysis of incorrect classifications
Visualization, interpretation and documentation of the results and derivation of recommendations for a later series use
The activity can start from October 2026. The final thesis and definition will take place in consultation with you and us for the start of the internship.
